GAME LOG
MIAMI (AP) Mark Leiter never expected to be celebrating another victory. With his children in the stands, Leiter gave up two runs in six innings for his first win in more than 2 1/2 years, and Jeromy Burnitz had a double and two RBIs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Florida Marlins 8-2 Saturday. After pitching just 1 1/3 innings in the majors in 1999, and missing all of last season because of right shoulder surgery, the 38-year-old Leiter is embracing another chance. "I'm absolutely thrilled," said Leiter, who hadn't won since beating Philadelphia on Aug. 28, 1998. "I never expected to get another win in the big leagues after retiring last year. For me to be out here, and have my kids here was incredible." Leiter (1-1), backed by a five-run first inning, had his longest outing of the season. He gave up four hits, walked one and struck out four. Acquired from Colorado on April 4, Leiter made his second start of the season. He's also appeared five times in relief. "Mark pitched a heck of a game," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. "He just keeps getting better and better. We need that." Allen Levrault and Ray King completed the five-hitter. Florida's runs came on Cliff Floyd's two-run homer in the sixth inning, his 10th of the season and fourth in three games. Floyd had two hits off Leiter, but said the right-hander "really kept us off balance." Burnitz was 2-for-4 with a run-scoring double in the first and an RBI single in the fifth. Matt Clement (1-2) gave up seven runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. "He was just erratic," Burnitz said. "He has great stuff. There's no doubt. We had a chance to zone in a little bit, and we got some big hits in the first inning." Milwaukee scored five runs with two outs in the first inning. After Burnitz's double, Richie Sexson had an RBI triple, Tyler drove in a run, and Henry Blanco had a two-run double. "That was the game," Marlins manager John Boles said. "We got behind 5-0 and Leiter knew what to do with the lead." Burnitz had an RRI single in the fifth, and Sexson drove in his second run on a grounder. Jose Hernandez homered off Armando Almanza in the sixth for an 8-0 lead. Leiter is 6-3 lifetime against Florida. "Any opportunity they give me to pitch, I'm going to give it everything I have," Leiter said. Game notesFlorida's Mike Lowell was 0-for-2, stopping his 14-game hitting streak, and Preston Wilson's 10-game streak ended. ... The Brewers, who have 46 home runs, are on pace to hit 270, which would shatter the franchise record of 216. ... Brewers 1B Sexson hit his second triple of the season. ... After the game, the Marlins announced pitcher Jason Grilli was sent to Triple-A Calgary.
