GAME LOG
MILWAUKEE (AP) In consecutive games, Tom Gordon got his first win in two years and his first save. "After what I've been through, these two games have been very big," Gordon said Monday night after getting the save in the Chicago Cubs' 7-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Gordon, who helped the Cubs stretch their winning streak to four, missed the 2000 season after reconstructive elbow surgery on Dec. 13, 1999. On Sunday, he got the win by pitching a hitless ninth in a 3-2 win over Los Angeles. "Until your career flashes in front of your eyes, you don't realize how much you love what you do," Gordon said. Chicago manager Don Baylor used left-hander Jeff Fassero in the eighth and the right-handed Gordon in the ninth. "It worked out well tonight," Baylor said. "Both guys did a good job." Gordon said the lefty-righty combination could be a weapon for the Cubs. He was surprised when a board at Miller Park recorded 97 mph on one of his fastballs. "I've never thrown a ball 97 before," he said. Chicago wasted a 5-1 lead and fell behind 6-5 before Rondell White's two-run single in the eighth off David Weathers (1-1). Weathers hit Bill Mueller with a pitch, Sammy Sosa doubled and White then grounded a single to right. "It was almost like 'Angels in the Outfield,' like somebody grabbed the ball and threw it at his knee," said Weathers, upset he hit Mueller. Todd Van Poppel (1-0) pitched a hitless seventh. Gordon, Chicago's fifth pitcher, got three outs for his first save since May 31, 1999, for Boston against Detroit. Gordon, who saved 46 games for the Red Sox n 1999, gave up a single to Tony Fernandez and walked Ron Belliard before striking out Tyler Houston to end the game. Eric Young was 4-for-5 for the Cubs, and Belliard was 3-for-4 for the Brewers. Brewers starter Paul Rigdon gave up five runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. Chicago's Jon Lieber took a two-hitter into the sixth but wound up allowing six runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Mueller's sacrifice fly but Chicago ahead in the first but Jeffrey Hammonds tied it with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half with Belliard on third. Plate umpire Charlie Reliford ruled that catcher Joe Girardi interfered with Hammonds' swing. While the Brewers could have had runners at first and third with one out, manager Davey Lopes decided to take the play and the run. Jeromy Burnitz then lined out to right. Matt Stairs' two-run single gave Chicago a 3-1 lead in the third and Sosa hit a two-run single in the fourth for a four-run advantage, chasing Rigdon. Milwaukee came back to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth on Belliard's RBI single, Burnitz's two-run single and Devon White's two-run homer, which chased Lieber. White was playing left field in place of the injured Geoff Jenkins. "Lieber was sailing along with a two-hitter and all of a sudden they got to him," Baylor said. "He's not the type of guy who usually gives up two or three hits in a row." Lopes lamented losing after coming back in the sixth inning. "You lose a game late, it takes a lot more out of you than if you get blown out early," he said. Game notesMilwaukee 1B Richie Sexson did not start because of a sore knee, sustained when he was hit by a pitch from the Marlins' Chuck Smith on Sunday. He is day to day. ... Miller Park was the 100th major league ballpark the Cubs have played in during their 126-year history. ... Young had four hits for the 15th time in his career, the fifth time with the Cubs. | OTHER GAMES Baseball Scoreboard Chicago Cubs Clubhouse Milwaukee Clubhouse RECAPS Chi. White Sox 7 Texas 4
