GAME LOG
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) When Carlos Lee is feeling good at the
plate, it really doesn't matter how much he knows about the
pitcher.
| | | Carlos Lee doubled twice and homered to raise his average to .333, and scored twice in Chicago's 7-4 win. |
Lee homered, hit two doubles and drove in three runs against
Texas rookie R.A. Dickey as the Chicago White Sox beat the Rangers
7-4 Monday.
Texas starter Darren Oliver was knocked out of the game and onto
the disabled list by Chicago leadoff hitter Tony Graffanino. The
Rangers replaced him with Dickey (0-1), their 1996 first-round
pick, making only his fourth major league appearance.
"All of a sudden everything changes, especially a guy you've
never seen," Lee said. "But I feel good at the plate. When you
feel good, no matter what the pitcher throws, it's pretty good."
Lee's double in the first put the White Sox ahead 2-0 in the
makeup game, played in a nearly empty ballpark. After the Rangers
took a 3-2 lead, Lee doubled again in the fourth and scored on a
two-run double by Chris Singleton that put Chicago ahead to stay.
Paul Konerko hit a two-run homer in the fifth off Dickey, and
Lee hit the next pitch for his fourth homer and a 7-3 lead.
Oliver was struck on the left thumb by a ball off the bat of
Graffanino leading off the game and needed stitches to close a cut.
He will be put on the 15-day DL on Tuesday.
"When a team has struggled in the bullpen, obviously it gives
you some confidence that you are probably getting somewhat of a
lesser guy," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "In a sense,
it's kind of uplifting for you as a team. You try to use it from
your point of view as a positive."
Chicago took two of three in Jerry Narron's first series as
Texas manager. In Narron's first game after replacing Johnny Oates,
the White Sox took a 6-0 lead Friday before the game was rained out
in the fourth inning.
"Our guys battled. We got guys on base and we didn't quit,"
Narron said. "That's all you can ask for."
While the announced paid attendance Monday was 30,073, there
were only about 4,500 people in the stands.
Jon Garland (1-1) allowed three runs and seven hits in five
innings.
Keith Foulke, the fifth Chicago pitcher, got Alex Rodriguez to
ground into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in
the eighth and finished for his sixth save, striking out Ken
Caminiti to end the game with two on.
"You go through stretches where you don't have a big hit,"
said Rodriguez, hitting .305 with 10 homers and 27 RBI. "I take
full responsibility. I'm frustrated. The remedy is hard work."
Foulke has converted 18 straight save chances.
"I don't even know what that is. You make one pitch at a time
every time out. If you make your pitches, good things happen most
of the time," Foulke said. "That's the type of situations I love
pitching in."
Oliver threw just four pitches, but was charged with the first
run to raise his ERA from 7.85 to 8.16. While X-rays were negative,
Oliver's thumb was badly bruised from the liner.
Dickey allowed six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, and the
Rangers said he would be optioned back to Triple-A Oklahoma on
Tuesday.
"You can see the results," Dickey said. "I have to find the
positive things I did and keep encouraging myself."
Texas tied the game at 2 on Gabe Kapler's two-run single in the
first. Rafael Palmeiro hit his seventh homer in the third, putting
Texas up 3-2 and tying him with Duke Snider for 31st on the career
list with 407 homers.
Caminiti's sacrifice fly in the eighth came after Frank
Catalanotto's leadoff triple.
Game notes
Oliver's outing was the shortest in the majors this season.
The last starting pitcher to throw to just one batter was
Colorado's Pedro Astacio, last Sept. 6 against the Cubs. He, too,
was struck on the throwing hand by a leadoff hitter's liner. ...
Caminiti stopped an 0-for-12 streak with an infield single in the
fourth. Two innings earlier, he snapped his bat over his upper leg
after striking out. ... Kapler was 3-for-4 and is hitting .409 with
hits in 11 of 12 games since coming off the disabled list. ... It
was the second game in a row the White Sox and Rangers were tied
2-2 after the first. Chicago went on to win 10-5 Sunday. ... The
Rangers on Tuesday will activate closer Tim Crabtree from the
disabled list and recall RHP Aaron Myette from Triple-A Oklahoma.
