GAME LOG
PHOENIX (AP) First, Sean Casey tied the game in the seventh.
Then, he won it in the 10th.
| | | Arizona's Luis Gonzalez watches his major league-leading 16th home run leave the park Monday. | Casey, who took an inning-ending called third strike in the
fourth inning, hit a two-run homer and an RBI double to lead the
Cincinnati Reds over the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 Monday night.
"He made a great pitch on me," Casey said about Brian
Anderson's strikeout in the fourth. "He painted the outside
corner. Sometimes you've got to tip your hat. But that's why you
have four at-bats, and you've got to use each one to try and do
your best."
Casey tied the score 4-all with his homer off Anderson. It
followed a single and stolen base by Deion Sanders, who was
2-for-5.
Alex Ochoa tripled off Greg Swindell (0-1) leading off the 10th
and Casey doubled to the center field wall, helping the Reds stop a
season-high, five-game losing streak.
"When he's relaxed, it's bad news for somebody," Reds manager
Bob Boone said.
Luis Gonzalez hit his major league-leading 16th home run for the
Diamondbacks, 1-10 against the Reds at home.
Danny Graves (1-0) escaped a jam in the ninth, intentionally
walking Gonzalez to load the bases with one out before retiring
Matt Williams on a popup and Danny Bautista on a groundout.
"Houdini still lives, for now," said Graves, who was going
over the pitches he planned to throw Gonzalez when he got the order
to walk him.
"First thing that Skip says to me is, 'Walk Gonzalez,' and I'm
thinking, 'Please don't throw it to the backstop, or the game's
over."'
Anderson allowed four runs and 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings. Reds
starter Pete Harnisch gave up four runs and seven hits in five
innings.
"I go out there and take good stuff and, for the most part, all
night long I have good location, and still manage to give up 11
hits," Anderson said. "I don't understand that. But outside of
Casey's and maybe one other, I don't think they had a hard hit. It
was broken-bat bloopers, ground balls in the hole, stuff like
that."
Anderson put Arizona ahead with an RBI groundout in the second
inning and the Diamondbacks made it 3-0 in the third.
Gonzalez hit a solo homer for the first run of the inning, but
lamented popping up in the first and fourth innings.
"I had a couple of situations in my first and third at-bats
when I didn't come through, so it's frustrating," Gonzalez said.
"A home run means nothing to me if I could get those ABs back."
Later in the third, Erubiel Durazo scored all the way from first
when second baseman Pokey Reese's throw to first trying to prevent
an infield single by Damian Miller sailed into the seats for a
two-base error.
Reese tripped going over second as he made the throw. Reds
manager Bob Boone was angry umpires didn't call the play a one-base
error and Cincinnati played the rest of the game under protest.
Cincinnati closed to 3-2 in the fourth on Kelly Stinnett's RBI
single and Barry Larkin's run-scoring double.
Miller's sacrifice fly made it 4-2 in the fifth.
Game notes Williams doubled in the fifth, extending his hitting streak
to a team-high 10 games. ... Casey moved ahead of Dmitri Young and
Aaron Boone with his team-high sixth homer. ... Arizona OF David
Dellucci (knee), IF Greg Colbrunn (knee) and RHP Armando Reynoso
(back of shoulder) had MRI exams Monday. The procedures found no
serious injuries or structural damage. ... Dmitri Young was
scratched because of back spasms and missed his first start in 31
games this year.
