Padres smack Maddux for 12 hits
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Almost all the San Diego Padres got into the act against Greg Maddux, even pitcher Kevin Jarvis.

Rickey Henderson extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a leadoff triple, and the Padres got 11 more hits off Maddux to beat the Atlanta Braves 7-1 Tuesday night.

Jarvis and two relievers combined on a six-hitter for the Padres, who won their fifth straight and eighth in nine games. The Padres, who went 1-8 against Atlanta last year, pulled back to .500 (16-16) for the first time since April 15.

Jarvis also had what turned out to be the key hit, a two-run, bases-loaded single with two outs in the fifth that made it 4-0.

"We tried to be as patient as we could be," said Tony Gwynn, who came off the disabled list and had two singles and a stolen base. "We had some opportunities early in the game. At one point we had two runs on 11 hits.

"But Jarvis threw the ball really well to keep them from getting on the board while we kept getting opportunities, and finally Kevin Jarvis stepped up there and got the big hit, really, that broke the game open."

Jarvis has five RBIs in just 15 at-bats, one less than Gwynn and one more than Henderson.

"I knew it was important to poke one more run across and extend our lead, give us a little bit of a cushion," Jarvis said.

He said it was a thrill to beat Maddux.

"I certainly look up to him a tremendous amount," Jarvis said. "I mean, I'd pay to watch him pitch. I was just fortunate enough to be able to see his pitches up close and personal. It was a treat. Even though he gave up 12 hits, he really wasn't out of the game. That's a testament to the quality of pitcher he is."

Maddux (3-3) said he wasn't unhappy with the way he threw.

"The funny thing is, I probably threw better tonight than I did five days ago," he said, referring to throwing a two-hitter and striking out a career-high 14 in a 1-0 win over Milwaukee. "That's why this game is hard to figure out."

Henderson finished 3-for-5, giving him 2,934 career hits and moving him out of a tie with Jake Beckley and into sole possession of 29th place on the all-time list. He also scored twice and stole two bases.

Maddux allowed four runs in six innings, struck out five and walked two. The 12 hits were the most he has allowed since giving up 13 to the New York Yankees in 5 2/3 innings of an 11-7 win last June 3. The four-time Cy Young Award winner fell to 9-10 lifetime against the Padres.

Mark Kotsay was 3-for-5 and drove in San Diego's first two runs, with singles in the first and fourth innings. Damian Jackson added a two-run double in the seventh off erratic reliever Kerry Ligtenberg, who was recalled earlier in the day after spending four days with Triple-A Richmond.

Every Padres regular except ex-Brave Ryan Klesko got a hit off Maddux. Klesko greeted Ligtenberg with a single leading off the seventh.

Maddux threw 28 pitches in the first inning. Henderson tripled into the right-field corner and scored on Kotsay's single to left. Gwynn followed with a single to right. Kotsay and Gwynn pulled a double steal with one out, but were stranded when Jackson struck out with the bases loaded.

Maddux allowed three straight singles with one out in the fifth, and with two outs, Jarvis singled up the middle to score two runs.

Jarvis allowed a solo homer in the sixth to catcher Paul Bako, who came in hitting just .053. Jarvis gave up four hits and one run in seven innings.
