GAME LOG
BOSTON (AP) Manny Ramirez is supposed to hit homers. The
Boston Red Sox also got power from less likely sources.
| | | Manny Ramirez, left, gets a pat on the helmet from Jose Offerman after hitting one of Boston's four two-run homers. |
Infielders Jose Offerman, Chris Stynes and Shea Hillenbrand
joined Ramirez in hitting two-run homers as Boston handed the
Seattle Mariners their third straight loss, 12-4 Tuesday night.
"It's nice when you win a ballgame," Offerman said.
"Especially against a team that's playing so well."
Seattle began the day with baseball's best record, 23-8, with
unbeaten Jamie Moyer on the mound. But just five days after Moyer
(5-1) pitched seven innings in a 10-3 win over the Red Sox in
Seattle, they hit three homers against him in 3 1/3 innings.
"I felt good," he said. "Unfortunately, you feel good
sometimes and don't have the results."
Offerman has felt fine all season but only now is showing power.
He has homers in three straight games for the first time in his
career and four for the season. He hit a career-high nine last
year.
"I've been feeling the same way from the first game I played
this year," Offerman said. "Lately, I've been able to hit the
ball in the gap."
Hillenbrand has four homers after jumping to the majors from
Double-A Trenton, and Stynes has two.
"They're special because they don't happen too often" for him,
Stynes said. "That's the whole point, to get hits with runners in
scoring position."
After scoring just nine runs in four games, the Red Sox have
scored 23 in their last three, all wins. The 12 runs were a
season-high as Boston broke a tie for the AL East lead with
Toronto, which lost to Oakland.
Hideo Nomo (4-2) left after five innings with a 9-3 lead. Tim
Wakefield and Derek Lowe pitched two innings each.
"We feel like we have a good team and we got off to a good
start," Seattle's John Olerud said, "but it's not realistic to
believe you can keep playing at that pace."
Ramirez gave Boston a 2-0 lead with his first-inning homer, his
10th, after a walk to Offerman. Seattle tied it in the second on
Mike Cameron's fifth homer and an RBI single by Ichiro Suzuki,
playing his first game in Fenway Park.
"It's such a history-laden ballpark," he said, "but for an
outfielder, it's different because of the angles" of the fences.
Boston went ahead in the third when Troy O'Leary beat out a
grounder for an RBI single. The Red Sox had loaded the bases when
Ramirez was walked intentionally.
Seattle tied it in the fourth when Dan Wilson walked, Suzuki
doubled and Mark McLemore grounded to first.
The Red Sox added four runs in the fourth on Jason Varitek's
leadoff single, Hillenbrand's fourth homer, a walk to Stynes and
Offerman's homer.
The Red Sox hit four homers for the first time since a 10-0 win
over Tampa Bay on April 17, in which Ramirez hit two.
Moyer had allowed five homers in 35 innings before Tuesday, when
he had his shortest stint in seven starts.
The Red Sox last two-run homer came in the fifth by Stynes. They
added runs in the sixth and eighth on RBI-doubles by Dante Bichette
and O'Leary. Varitek singled in the last run in the eighth.
Seattle center fielder Cameron bruised his right knee while
slamming into the left-field wall on O'Leary's double and was
listed as day-to-day. He was replaced by Charles Gipson.
Game notes
Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 14 games after going
2-for-5. The rookie has hit in 30 of his 32 games. ... Every Boston
starter except Mike Lansing had at least one hit. Lansing's error
in the ninth was the first by a Boston shortstop this season. He
and Craig Grebeck have alternated while Nomar Garciaparra recovers
from wrist surgery. ... Bichette extended his hitting streak to 10
games. ... Moyer missed a chance to join John Halama, Randy Johnson
and Rick Honeycutt as the only Mariners to start a season 6-0.
Teammate Aaron Sele, who starts Wednesday, is 5-0.
