GAME LOG
CHICAGO (AP) The Anaheim Angels made a bad day for the Chicago
White Sox even worse.
| | | Tim Salmon follows through on this 10th-inning hit, which drives in the winning run. |
Tim Salmon's 10th-inning grounder drove in the winning run as
the Angels beat the White Sox 7-6 Thursday night on a day Chicago
learned Frank Thomas was lost for the season with a torn triceps
and starter Jim Parque needs shoulder surgery.
"Everybody loses players during the course of the season.
You've got to get good performances no matter who you have," White
Sox manager Jerry Manuel said after his team's four-game winning
streak was snapped.
"This is the major leagues and nobody is going to feel sorry
for you. You've got to move on."
David Eckstein singled off Keith Foulke (1-3) to start the 10th
and moved to third on Darin Erstad's hit-and-run single.
Salmon then hit a grounder to shortstop Royce Clayton, who did
not have a play at the plate. Instead, he tried to turn a double
play and only wound up with a forceout at second base.
Troy Percival (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win as
the Angels snapped a three-game losing streak.
"As far as I can remember these guys have gotten me a few
times," Percival said. "We needed to come out of here with one
win because Seattle's playing so well and we have to stay with them.
We'll get hot."
The White Sox, reeling from the news that Thomas would miss the
remainder of the season following next week's surgery on a torn
triceps, rallied to tie it on Sandy Alomar Jr.'s two-run homer off
Shigetoshi Hasegawa in the eighth.
In the ninth, Jose Valentin hit a two-out single and stole
second before Magglio Ordonez, who homered twice, struck out on a
3-2 pitch from Percival.
Orlando Palmeiro and Jose Molina, the No. 8 and 9 hitters in the
Angels' lineup, connected on back-to-back homers in the fifth to
give the Angels a 5-3 lead. Palmeiro's second of the season and
Molina's first in the majors came off Rocky Biddle.
Garret Anderson also hit a two-run homer in the first when the
Angels scored three times. Erstad forced Eckstein, who had singled
to lead off, stole second, raced to third on Alomar's overthrow and
scored on Biddle's wild pitch. Salmon walked before Anderson hit
his fourth homer to make it 3-0.
Ray Durham hit a two-run homer, his third homer in as many
games, to make it 3-2 in the third and the White Sox tied it in the
fourth on Ordonez's solo shot off emergency starter Al Levine.
Levine, the loser in relief Wednesday night, started when Scott
Schoeneweis was scratched just before game time with back spasms.
"I tried to get up and see if I could work it out on the way
out to the mound, but I couldn't walk," Schoeneweis said.
"Hopefully he'll be able to make his next start. It kind of
took us by surprise," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
Ordonez connected again in the sixth off Ben Weber to make it
5-4.
Eckstein hit an RBI single in the seventh to finish Biddle, who
set up the run by giving up a single to Palmeiro and then throwing
another wild pitch.
Game notes Left-hander Jim Parque, who started the playoff opener for
the White Sox last season, will undergo surgery on his left
shoulder Tuesday. Parque, a 13-game winner last season, was 0-3
this year with an 8.04 ERA and had experienced a drop in velocity
in his pitches. He earlier underwent an MRI and on Thursday had his
sore shoulder re-examined. ... Erstad's first-inning steal was his
first this season. He stole a career high 28 a year ago. ... Durham
has homered in three straight games for the second time in his
career. He also did it last June. ... The No. 8 and 9 hitters in
the Angels' order this season have accounted for 37 runs and 38
RBIs in 34 games. ... The four homers were a season high for the
White Sox. The Angels had given up only 23 homers all season
entering the game. ... After the game, the Angels send infielder
Jose Nieves to Triple-A Salt Lake City and will make a roster move
Friday to fill his spot.
