Rueter, Kent lift Giants
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Kirk Rueter wasn't about to let his last start set the tone for the rest of the season.

Rueter bounced back from a dismal outing with eight scoreless innings against Montreal as the San Francisco Giants blanked the Expos 13-0 Thursday.

Rueter, who allowed just six hits with a strikeout and two walks, was coming off his worst career start. He gave up eight runs on six hits in one-plus inning at Philadelphia on Sunday.

"I just took the approach that I had two bad innings in May -- and I'm not going to let two bad innings ruin the season," he said.

Rueter was pitching on just three days of rest.

"You would never know he got roughed up in his last outing," manager Dusty Baker said. "That's the kind of guy he is, the kind of competitor he is."

The Giants got a season-high 18 hits. Jeff Kent hit a two-run double in San Francisco's eight-run sixth inning and Armando Rios went 4-for-6 with two RBI.

Chad Zerbe retired the side in the ninth. There was no question that Rueter, who has not thrown a complete game since June 1999, was done.

"Somebody said I threw 27 pitches in the eighth, so that sort of did me in," Rueter said.

All four of Rueter's victories this season have followed Giants' defeats. San Francisco was shut out by Montreal 8-0 Wednesday night.

Britt Reames (2-4) lost his fourth consecutive start, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on six hits with five walks. He has not won since April 14 against Florida.

"He didn't have much from the get-go," Expos manager Felipe Alou said. "He was inconsistent with his location and he walked too many guys. He walked the pitcher."

Reames was pulled after walking Rueter with the bases loaded in the third inning and giving the Giants a 4-0 lead. He was replaced by Masato Yoshii, whose throwing error in the fifth allowed Russ Davis to score.

Rios, Rueter, Marvin Benard and Shawon Dunston each hit run-scoring singles in the Giants' nine-hit, eight-run sixth. Davis added a sacrifice fly, J.T. Snow's grounder scored another run and Kent had a two-run double.

It was Kent's 14th double this season, and gave him 501 RBI as a Giant.

Orlando Cabrera doubled, then went to third on a groundout in the third inning, but the Expos could get no closer to scoring through seven innings. Rueter loaded the bases with two out in the eighth, but pinch-hitter Randy Knorr's pop foul was caught by Snow. Rueter jumped for joy afterward.

Snow, batting in Barry Bonds' usual No. 3 spot in the lineup, singled in the first inning with one out to score Benard. Snow scored on Rios' triple an out later, and Benito Santiago scored Rios with a double.

Bonds, who was not in the starting lineup, was hit in the left hand by Philadelphia pitcher Randy Wolf last Saturday, and played Wednesday night even though the injury was bothering him.

Game notes
Rios' triple in the first was his second in as many games and extended his hitting streak to five games. ... Giants first-base coach Robby Thompson was celebrating his 39th birthday Thursday. ... Montreal right-handed pitcher Hideki Irabu was scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Ottawa on Saturday. He has been on the disabled list with right elbow and knee tendinitis since March 23. ... Giants shortstop Rich Aurilia, who has 45 hits this season, had the day off. ... Expos third baseman Fernando Tatis reaggravated a right rotator cuff strain during the game and was expected to undergo an MRI on Friday in Denver.
