GAME LOG
SAN DIEGO (AP) A span of five batters summed up how the season
is going for the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres.
Tom Glavine took a two-hitter and a four-run lead into the sixth
inning Thursday, yet the Braves ended up losing 6-5 to the
Padres.

Backup catcher Wiki Gonzalez hit a three-run homer off reliever
Mike Remlinger to cap the five-run sixth as the Padres took two of
three from the struggling Braves.
It was San Diego's 10th victory in 13 games. Atlanta fell three
games below .500.
"It's fun to watch these guys come in and get the job done,"
said Padres manager Bruce Bochy, who was without Phil Nevin and
Tony Gwynn, both out with hamstring injuries.
Glavine said the game was indicative of the way the Braves have
been playing.
"That's one of those games where it should've been a lot better
than it was," the lefty said. "It's a frustrating game as a
pitcher. The guys give you a lead and everything's going pretty
well, and everything falls apart."
San Diego had just six hits, scoring all of its runs on three
homers. Mike Colangelo hit his first career homer, a two-run shot
off Glavine in the sixth, and Bubba Trammell a solo shot in the
second.
Gonzalez lined a homer to left-center on the second pitch from
Remlinger (1-1), who relieved Glavine with two on and the Braves
leading 5-3 with one out in the sixth.
With one out, Rickey Henderson worked a crucial walk and
Colangelo homered on a 2-0 pitch. Dave Magadan doubled into the
left-field corner and Trammell walked to chase Glavine.
Gonzalez, who started the day game following a night game,
didn't stick around to talk about his third homer.
Remlinger, though, was extremely self-critical.
"It was a stupid pitch because I'm an idiot," he said in a
profanity-laced diatribe.
"The guy hadn't seen a fastball yet from me so he has nothing
to gauge it against, so it made it a dumb pitch. As far as he can
tell, that's just an average 84 mph fastball right there to hit."
Henderson fell behind 1-2 to Glavine before drawing the walk. He
even fouled off one pitch when it was practically in catcher Javy
Lopez's mitt.
"He was wondering how I hit the ball," Henderson said. "I
told him it was an emergency swing that kept me alive.
"That's one thing about Glavine, it doesn't matter what the
count is, he's not giving in to you. That's what makes him a great
pitcher. He's going to make you hit his pitch."
The Padres beat Greg Maddux on Tuesday night.
"It's real good for a ballclub when you go out and you beat
Glavine and you beat Maddux," Henderson said. "You did something
fantastic for the ballclub."
Henderson's hitting streak ended at 13, one game short of
matching his career-best, set with Oakland from July 27-Aug. 10,
1980. He went 0-for-3 with a walk.
Rodney Myers (1-1) pitched a scoreless sixth to win in relief of
ineffective starter Adam Eaton.
Trevor Hoffman pitched 1 1/3 innings for his fifth save in six
chances. He came on with runners on first and second and two outs
in the eighth and struck out Chipper Jones.
Eaton fell behind 4-0 after allowing four hits and a walk in the
first. Chipper Jones hit a run-scoring double, Rico Brogna a two-run
single and another run scored on a throwing error by Trammell from
right field.
After Trammell homered in the second, the Braves made it 5-1 on
Andruw Jones' double in the fourth.
Glavine allowed five runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck
out four and walked three. Eaton gave up five runs -- four earned -- in five innings, with six strikeouts and three walks.
Game notes Gwynn sat out after his right hamstring cramped up
Wednesday night. Gwynn will likely miss a couple of starts, Bochy
said. Gwynn was playing in just his second game back from a stint
on the disabled list after straining the hamstring April 20. ...
With the no-decision, Glavine remains 5-0 against the Padres in
seven starts since Aug. 13, 1998. However, the Padres beat him
twice in the 1998 National League championship series ... Padres right-handed pitcher Brian
Tollberg was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken
middle finger on his right hand, suffered while fielding a
comebacker by Sean Casey on Sunday in Cincinnati. Tollberg was
replaced by Wascar Serrano from Triple-A Portland, who will make
his major league debut Saturday night against Florida, starting in
Tollberg's spot.
