Angels snap Tigers' five-game win streak
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DETROIT (AP) – Darin Erstad said the Anaheim Angels' best day at the plate this season would have been even bigger if not for cavernous Comerica Park.

Adam Kennedy and Darin Erstad, who had three hits apiece, celebrate the Angels' victory.

"We would've scored more if we were playing in any other park," said Erstad, who had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored in Anaheim's 14-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. "Troy Glaus hit a flyout that looked like it went about 490 feet to left-center.

"But we scraped and clawed and we'll take it."

The Angels entered the game 12th in the AL in scoring at 4.2 runs a game and had scored just 3.1 runs a game in their last 15 road contests.

They set a season high in runs and matched their best total of the year with 16 hits, but not one of them was a homer.

Anaheim scored runs in five innings and made the game a rout with a seven-run ninth inning, which was capped by a Benji Gil three-run double.

Adam Kennedy had three hits and Jose Molina scored three runs.

"If you apply enough pressure on a club, eventually you're going to crack through and create your own breaks," Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said. "I think this was a perfect example of that."

The Tigers, who committed two errors in the outfield that led to four runs, had won five straight and 12 of 15.

Detroit (17-18) reached .500 on Saturday for the first time in May since 1995, but still haven't had a winning record in May in eight years.

"This is just one of those games," outfielder Bobby Higginson said. "It's not the end of the world."

Jarrod Washburn (2-4) struck out a career-high nine batters in six-plus innings. He gave up two runs and five hits retiring 13 straight batters at one point.

"I'm not a strikeout pitcher, but I got a few today," Washburn said.

Chris Holt (3-3) allowed five runs – three earned – eight hits and four walks in 5 2-3 innings.

An error by Higginson in left field allowed the Angels to score two unearned runs in the third inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Garret Anderson hit a liner that Higginson dropped, allowing the first two runs of the game to score.

Erstad singled in the fifth and scored on a single by Orlando Palmeiro to make it 3-0. Kennedy doubled and scored on a squeeze bunt by David Eckstein and Glaus added an RBI double in the sixth.

"I think some little ball got lost in this game," Scioscia said.

An error by center fielder Juan Encarnacion led to two more unearned runs for Detroit in the seventh.

Scioscia thought both of Detroit's errors should've been hits. He talked with the official scorer after the game.

"If those two balls are errors than we're going to have a league full of guys hitting .200," Scioscia said.

Gil singled and scored to start the big ninth inning for the Angels, and capped the seven-run frame with his three-run double.

Washburn faced little trouble against the Tigers. With runners on second and third and one out in the first, Washburn struck out Tony Clark and Dean Palmer.

The right-hander then breezed through the middle innings before giving up an RBI single to Palmer in the sixth that made it 5-1. Washburn left after giving up singles to Juan Encarnacion and Shane Halter leading off the seventh.

"(Washburn) threw a whole bunch of fastballs," Detroit manager Phil Garner said. "That must have been mystery ball because we didn't hit one of them.

"We thought we might get to him later in the game. I don't know why he threw anything other than a fastball, we never did hit it."

Game notes
Higginson extended his hitting streak to 14 games, which matches a career-high, with a single in the eighth. ... The Angels return home to face Toronto and Cleveland this week after going 2-4 on this roadtrip. ... The Tigers go on the road to play Baltimore and Tampa Bay after going 5-1 at home. ... Holt lost for the first time since April 18. ... Anaheim's Jamie Burke, who was a pinch-hitter in the ninth, singled for his first career hit.
