GAME LOG
DENVER (AP) Milton Bradley brought his A-game to Coors Field.
| | | The Expos' Orlando Cabrera watches his three-run triple in the second inning. | After going hitless in his final 11 at-bats in a series at San
Francisco, Bradley capped a big weekend in Colorado with career
highs of four hits and five RBI to lead the Montreal Expos to a
14-10 win over the Rockies on Sunday.
"After that first game in San Francisco when I got three hits,
they shut me down completely," said Bradley, who went 6-for-12 at
Colorado. "The fact that I hit well in spring training and have
been in the lineup every day made me confident that I would come
around.
Bradley had a single, two doubles and a solo home run as the
Expos scored a season-high 14 runs. Vladimir Guerrero and Jose
Vidro hit two-run homers and Orlando Cabrera added a bases-loaded
triple for Montreal, which won for the fourth time in 12 games.
"Yes, I expect days like this from him," Alou said. "He was
going to be an everyday player this year when we traded Rondell (White) to
the Cubs last year."
Pedro Astacio (4-3) had his shortest outing of the year as he
failed to get his 100th career win. Astacio didn't retire a batter
in the third inning, giving up seven runs, four hits and four
walks.
"Pedro had a rough day, and we weren't able to get anybody else
come in to stop the bleeding either," Colorado manager Buddy Bell
said. "Pedro's all right as far as I know. He just had one of
those days."
Todd Helton went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI for the
Rockies. Helton is hitting .454 with 17 home runs and 46 RBI
lifetime against Montreal.
Graeme Lloyd (3-1) worked a perfect seventh inning for the win.
Cabrera's three-run triple highlighted a four-run second inning
for the Expos. Bradley followed walks to Guerrero and Vidro with an
RBI single. Michael Barrett drew a one-out walk to load the bases
and Cabrera sliced a triple to left center to clear the bases.
Astacio didn't retire the three batters he faced in the third
inning, giving up a leadoff homer to Guerrero, a walk to Vidro and
Bradley's RBI double. Mike Mordecai greeted Ron Villone with an RBI
triple to center.
Bradley's two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning increased
Montreal's lead to 9-0.
"I had been struggling from the right side and they walked
Vidro to get to me," Bradley said. "When someone presents me with
a challenge, I generally step up."
Montreal starter Mike Thurman didn't survive the fourth, giving
up seven hits and six runs in the inning. Neifi Perez, Jeff
Cirillo, Larry Walker, Todd Walker, Brent Mayne and Todd Helton
all had run-scoring singles in the inning.
The Expos added three runs in the sixth on an RBI double by
Guerrero and Vidro's two-run homer to lead 12-6. Helton answered
with a three-run homer, cutting the lead to 12-9 in the sixth.
Bradley hit a solo home run in the eighth for Montreal and
Cirillo hit a solo homer in the ninth for the Rockies.
"We won two in a row after crawling like babies the last four
weeks," Alou said. "Now we have to put some wins together and
keep winning."
Game notes Barrett played despite a sore knee and right hand. ...
Manager Felipe Alou said he would go fishing Monday on the Expos
off day. ... Yoshii had a 19 2/3-inning scoreless streak snapped by
Helton's three-run homer in the sixth. ... Vidro homered in
consecutive games for the first time since last Aug. 19-20. ...
Colorado activated Cirillo before Sunday's game and placed OF
Brooks Kieschnick on the 15-day DL with a strained left groin. ...
Larry Walker was back in the lineup after missing two games to
attend his grandfather's funeral in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.
... Astacio made his seventh career start of two innings or less.
