Three-run Ordonez blast the difference
RECAP

CHICAGO (AP) – With Frank Thomas likely gone for the year, the rest of the Chicago White Sox have turned up the power.

Magglio Ordonez
Magglio Ordonez gets the White Sox started right with a three-run homer in the first.

Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run shot – one of three homers by Chicago – and the White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 6-3 Sunday for their sixth win in eight games.

Herbert Perry and Carlos Lee also homered for the White Sox, who have hit 12 homers in four games since learning that slugger Thomas would likely be lost for the season with an injured right arm.

"We feel as though we have in our 3-4-5 guys, some of the best young right-handed hitters in the American League," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "It doesn't surprise me that they've continued to hit. They've had enough at-bats that they know what to do."

James Baldwin (2-2), went six innings, allowing three runs, five hits and a walk. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his five starts.

"I knew I didn't have my best stuff coming out of the bullpen," Baldwin said. "But I still had to pitch a ballgame. I learned last year in the second half, when I was hurting, what to do when you don't have your best stuff."

Kelly Wunsch pitched two scoreless innings and Keith Foulke pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save in as many chances. Foulke has converted 19 straight opportunities, the longest active streak in the majors.

"Now that we've gotten back to scoring runs, it's going to make it easier on the whole team," said Foulke, who hasn't blown a save since Aug. 20 against Tampa Bay. "It feels like things are coming back around."

Rafael Palmeiro hit his 10th homer, a two-run shot, to put Texas up 2-0 in the first.

With two on in the bottom of the first, Ordonez connected against Rick Helling for his eighth home run. One batter later, Perry homered.

After the shaky start, Helling (1-6) didn't give up a run over his last five innings. He struck out six.

"I'm tired of pitching badly, with reckless abandon," Helling said. "I made two bad pitches to two good hitters. I'm tired of making excuses, that 'His fastball is slower or 'He's lost 15 pounds.' I have to get it back for myself, nobody can do it for me."

Texas manager Jerry Narron was glad Helling battled back.

"His velocity is fine," Narron said. "He pitched very well after the first – so did Baldwin – two veteran guys."

Rusty Greer opened the Texas third with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Rodriguez, closing the Rangers within 4-3.

Texas put the leadoff hitters on base in the fifth and sixth, but Chicago turned double plays both times.

Tony Graffanino doubled to lead off the Chicago seventh against reliever Mark Petkovsek. Lee followed with his fifth home run.

Game notes
Chris Singleton went 2-for-4. He has 11 hits in his last 25 at-bats (.440) and has hit in seven straight games. He is also doing with an old Albert Belle bat, left behind from the retired slugger's two seasons in Chicago. ... Texas has dropped 18 of its last 24 games. ... Thomas is set to have surgery Tuesday to repair torn muscle fibers in his right arm.
