GAME LOG
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- After the emotional high of catching A.J.
Burnett's no-hitter, Charles Johnson provided his own big moment.
Johnson connected for a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh
inning, rallying the Florida Marlins to a 10-4 win Sunday over the
San Diego Padres.
The Marlins trailed 4-1 before Johnson's heroics put them in the
lead, one day after Burnett threw a no-hitter.
"After the emotions of last night, you never know how the next
day will turn out," said Johnson, who had never hit a grand slam.
"What an unbelievable, emotional high for me."
Florida was scuffling against Kevin Jarvis, who held a 4-1 lead
with two outs in the seventh. But Preston Wilson's infield single
off Jarvis' leg and a single by Derrek Lee drove Jarvis from the
game.
Kevin Walker walked pinch-hitter Cliff Floyd on four pitches,
bringing up Johnson against Jay Witasick.
"He threw a slider up in the zone and I got the barrel on it,"
Johnson said. "That was unbelievable, to be able to get a hit
there."
"It's a no-brainer, really," Marlins manager John Boles said
about using Johnson in that situation. "He's had a great season to
date."
Johnson drove a 1-2 slider from Witasick (2-2) into the
left-field stands for his 10th homer of the season. It was the
first pinch-hit homer of his career.
"It was a crazy game," Jarvis said. "In the seventh inning,
we think we have a great chance of winning. But it wasn't the
case."
Johnson added an RBI single in a five-run eighth, keyed by Cliff
Floyd's bases-loaded triple.
Wilson had four hits for Florida.
"What a great two days of baseball," Wilson said. "First,
you've got the no-hitter, then the great comeback today. Man, this
was fun."
Brad Penny (3-0) struggled through six innings for the win. He
gave up four runs on six hits, five walks and a hit batter.
An error and wild pitch by Witasick helped lead to five unearned
runs in the eighth. Wilson drove in the first run with a
bases-loaded single, Floyd tripled with two outs and Johnson
singled.
Kevin Millar hit his first homer of the season, giving the
Marlins a 1-0 lead in the first.
Bubba Trammell keyed the Padres' three-run sixth with a two-run
homer, his sixth to break a 1-1 tie. Trammell also drove in San
Diego's first run with a grounder.
Game notes
Johnson's homer was the second pinch-hit grand slam in
Marlins' history. Bruce Aven did it on May 7, 1999, at Los Angeles.
... Padres pitching coach Dave Smith made his first mound visit
since returning to the team on Tuesday following alcohol
rehabilitation. Smith went to check on the status of Jarvis after
being hit by Wilson's grounder. ... Mark Kotsay tied a Padres'
single-game team record with four walks, accomplished 14 times
previously.
