MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Boston's starting pitchers seem to dominate
the Minnesota Twins, no matter who is pitching.
Frank Castillo threw six shutouts innings and Shea Hillenbrand
drove in three runs to lead the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the
Twins in a meeting of division leaders Tuesday night.
Castillo (4-2) gave up two hits and four walks in six innings,
making the longest of his eight starts this season, as the AL East
leader won its third straight.
The Twins have managed only 15 hits off Red Sox starting
pitchers over 25 innings in four games this season.
The Red Sox lead the major leagues with a 3.26 ERA and add a
pair of new starters to their rotation in the next two days.
Tim Wakefield (1-0) will make his first start of the season
Wednesday night. David Cone joined the team following a minor
league rehabilitation assignment in Florida for a shoulder injury.
Cone will start Thursday.
The Red Sox sent Tomo Ohka and Paxton Crawford to Triple-A
Pawtucket to make room for Cone and right-hander Hipolito Pichardo,
who also came off the DL.
"They have a good pitching staff," the Twins' Denny Hocking
said. "Look at the two guys they had to send out. I asked if we
could have those guys."
Castillo loaded the bases with two outs in the first on two
walks and a hit batter, then got Chad Allen to ground into a
fielder's choice. He stranded seven runners, five in the first
three innings.
"From the third inning on, I thought he settled in pretty
darned good," Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said.
That was important for Castillo, who had given up nine earned
runs over 9 2/3 innings in previous two starts.
"You want to feel good about yourself," Castillo said. "You
want to give yourself a chance to win."
Castillo was beginning the fifth of six shutout innings when a
bank of lights went out in the Metrodome, creating an 18-minute
delay.
"I didn't know what was going on," Castillo said.
The light failure apparently was caused by a power surge that
affected downtown Minneapolis.
Twins manager Tom Kelly said crew chief Mark Hirschbeck asked
him if they wanted to play under the dimmed lights.
"I said no, then I thought maybe we should," Kelly said. "We
hadn't done anything, anyway."
Dante Bichette and Hillenbrand hit RBI singles in the
first, and Carl Everett chased Mark Redman (2-4) with a run-scoring
single in the fifth. Hillenbrand added a two-run single in the
ninth off Travis Miller.
Redman gave up eight hits in five innings.
Cristian Guzman scored in the seventh off Rich Garces on a
throwing error by Hillenbrand on Luis Rivas' grounder to third.
Guzman had an RBI single off Derek Lowe in the ninth.
Game notes
Minnesota DH David Ortiz is to undergo surgery Thursday on
his right wrist, which was broken May 5. ... Bichette has hit
safely in 14 consecutive games. ... Boston's Jose Offerman has a
nine-game hitting streak. ... Guzman extended his hitting streak to
10 games. Doug Mientkiewicz's hitting streak was snapped at nine
games.
