GAME LOG
MONTREAL (AP) -- Javier Vazquez gives the Montreal Expos at least
one pitcher who can compete against the Los Angeles Dodgers' staff.
| | | The Expos' Orlando Cabrera slides into third for a triple under the glove of Adrain Beltre. | "Some clubs have three or four pitchers like Vazquez, or
more or less like him," Expos manager Felipe Alou said Tuesday
night after Vazquez's two-hitter led Montreal to its third straight
win, 2-0 over Los Angeles.
"He's beautiful when he throws like that," Alou said. "Smart,
with real good stuff."
Vazquez (4-4), who pitched seven shutout innings to win his
previous start, got his third career shutout and extended his
scoreless-innings streak to a career-high 16.
"That's great for us, we needed to put together some wins,"
Vazquez said. "We were struggling and we know we're a better team
than that. We know that and everybody knows that."
Orlando Cabrera's RBI triple and Vladimir Guerrero's run-scoring
double off Chan Ho Park (4-4) provided Vazquez with all the offense
he needed as he threw his sixth career complete game, his first
this season.
"The guys played great tonight," Vazquez said. "We had great
defense and timely hitting today."
Vazquez, who lost 7-0 to Park last Aug. 24 at Los Angeles in the
last meeting between the two teams, allowed Mark Grudzielanek's
one-out single in the first and Shawn Green's two-out single in the
fourth.
"He threw very well," Grudzielanek said. "Not many people hit
him too well, or hit him too hard. We needed to put a little
pressure on him and we couldn't do it."
Vazquez hit Alex Cora with a pitch with one out in the sixth,
retiring 16 of the last 17 hitters.
"When he got Shawn Green out in the first inning, I knew he was
going to be on," Expos catcher Michael Barrett said. "I just knew
to sit back and move for him."
He struck out nine, walked none and was given a standing ovation
by the crowd of just 4,714 at Olympic Stadium as he came to the
plate to lead off the eighth.
Vazquez pitched one-hit shutout in Los Angeles on Sept. 14,
1999.
"I've had some bad games against them, too," Vazquez said. "I
just threw a good game today, and that's it. I don't think of teams
or anything like that."
Barrett walked with one out in the third, advanced to second on
Vazquez's sacrifice and scored on Cabrera's triple down the
left-field line.
Montreal made it 2-0 one inning later when Guerrero doubled to
right-center to drive in Lee Stevens from first.
Park allowed six hits and two runs in seven innings. He struck
out eight and walked two.
Game notes Both the Dodgers and the Expos had yet to win on a Tuesday
entering the game. Los Angeles is 0-6 on Tuesdays while Montreal
improved to 1-5. ... Dodgers utility man Hiram Bocachica changed
his uniform No. 46 for No. 33 before the game. Bocachica was traded
by Montreal to Los Angeles on July 31, 1998, along with
Grudzielanek and Carlos Perez. ... Expos utilityman Geoff Blum had
X-rays on his left foot Tuesday. Blum, who was 7-for-15 (.467) in
his last four games, was hit on the foot by a Pedro Astacio pitch
in the Expos' series finale at Colorado on Sunday. The X-rays were
negative and Blum is day-to-day. ... Guerrero was thrown out at
third trying to stretch his double in the fourth. ... The Expos
recalled SS Tomas De La Rosa from Triple-A Ottawa and purchased the
contract of RHP Bob Scanlan following the game. 1B-OF Fernando
Seguignol and LHP Joey Eischen were designated for assignment.
