A two-run single by Hernandez capped a five-run third inning
Tuesday for the San Francisco Giants, who extended their
season-best winning streak to five games by beating Dempster and
the Florida Marlins 7-4.
Hernandez (3-5) has struggled this season, but he rose to the
occasion in the stadium where he helped the Marlins win the 1997
World Series. He was traded to the Giants in 1999 but still lives
in Miami.
"It was good for me to see my friends, my home, my family, my
dog," said Hernandez, who allowed four runs in six innings. "I
threw the ball good. I was happy to get the win."
The Giants moved into first place in the NL West, a half-game
ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"You always want to be in first place," Giants manager Dusty
Baker said. "I just hope we never see second place again."
Dempster (3-5), the Marlins' ace, struggled with his control and
lasted only 2 2/3 innings, his shortest outing since July 1, 1999.
He allowed five hits, five walks and six runs.
"The majority of the games I've lost, I've beaten myself,"
said Dempster, an All-Star last year. "I've just got to figure it
out. If I have to throw some pitches left-handed or underhanded --
whatever it takes."
Dempster's earned-run average rose to 5.17. He has walked 33 in 54 innings.
"In the bullpen I'm throwing strikes," he said. "But when you
walk guys all the time, you start thinking about walks."
Hernandez's single up the middle knocked out Dempster and put
the Giants ahead 6-2.
"I was looking for a fastball, and I hit it good," Hernandez
said.
The hit came after the Marlins intentionally walked Bobby
Estalella, who was hitting .206.
"Livan's a good hitter, and I know Estalella is struggling,"
Florida manager John Boles said. "But we'll take our chances with
a pitcher rather than an everyday player."
San Francisco's Rich Aurilia, who came in leading the league in
hitting, went 2-for-3 with two walks, hiking his average to .399.
Estalella snapped a 2-for-22 slump in the fifth with his third home
run, and J.T. Snow had a pair of sacrifice flies.
Robb Nen pitched a hitless ninth for his ninth save in 10
chances. He tied Gary Lavelle for second place on the Giants' save
list with 127. Rod Beck had 199.
Florida led 2-1 when Dempster gave up two walks to start the
third, and Barry Bonds doubled home the tying run. Jeff Kent
followed with an RBI single, and Snow hit a sacrifice fly. Armando
Rios doubled, and after Estalella walked to load the bases,
Hernandez singled.
Dempster gave up back-to-back walks that loaded the bases in the
first, and Snow's sacrifice fly put San Francisco up 1-0.
Florida went ahead in the bottom of the inning on Preston
Wilson's two-out RBI double and a run-scoring single by Mike
Lowell.
The Marlins scored twice in the sixth on Lowell's sacrifice fly
and an RBI single by Lyle Mouton, his first hit this year in 15
at-bats.
Game notes Giants 3B Russ Davis left in the third with flu-like
symptoms. ... Marlins SS Alex Gonzalez was a late scratch after his
car was stolen at his home. ... Bonds improved to 5-for-7 against
Dempster with five walks. ... Wilson says he was unaware teammate
A.J. Burnett had a no-hitter Saturday at San Diego until the ninth
inning. Burnett walked nine and hit a batter. ... Marlins RF Eric
Owens didn't start Tuesday. He had played in every inning this
season. ... RF Rios robbed Charles Johnson of an extra-base hit
with a running catch at the warning track in the first.
