GAME LOG
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Richie Sexson quickly made up for a
defensive miscue with a key hit.
| | | Milwaukee's Devon White watches his second-inning grand slam take flight. | Sexson's RBI double scored the go-ahead run in a four-run 10th
inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Philadelphia Phillies
14-10 Tuesday night after wasting an eight-run lead.
The Phillies tied it with two outs in the ninth as Jimmy Rollins
scored from second when reliever Curtis Leskanic made a wild throw
to first on an infield single by Scott Rolen.
Brewers manager Davey Lopes thought Sexson should've caught
Leskanic's low throw.
"It was one of those balls going 110 miles per hour," Sexson
said. "It hit the tip of my glove and the ground at the same time.
I apologized for it."
Devon White hit a grand slam, Sexson added a two-run homer and
Tyler Houston went 5-for-6 to pace a 22-hit attack for the Brewers.
Milwaukee set a franchise record with 12 extra-base hits.
"You get out to a jump like that, you don't want to lose the
game," Lopes said. "It can destroy you mentally."
Pinch-hitter Brian Hunter hit a three-run homer, Travis Lee and
Marlon Anderson added two-run homers and Bobby Abreu had a solo
shot for Philadelphia.
Milwaukee (22-17) has won four straight and is five games over
.500 for the first time since July 1, 1998. The Phillies, who tied
the Chicago Cubs for worst record in the majors last season, are
leading the NL East at 22-15.
"They're were a lot of hanging pitches out there by all of our
pitchers," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "A loss is a loss. I
don't like to lose any game. We just didn't make pitches tonight."
Leskanic (2-2) allowed one run in one inning after blowing his
first save opportunity in six chances.
Jeromy Burnitz, who had three doubles, started the 10th by
walking off Ricky Bottalico (2-3). Sexson followed with an RBI
double to left-center.
"I went up looking for a curve," Sexson said. "He threw two
fastballs and finally hung one."
Jose Hernandez and Raul Casanova added run-scoring singles and
Ron Belliard had an RBI double in the inning.
"I didn't have anything to put anybody away," Bottalico said.
Casanova's solo homer in the fifth inning off Chris Brock broke
a 9-all tie and three Milwaukee relievers held the Phillies
scoreless for four innings before the ninth.
Milwaukee scored three runs in the first and chased Amaury
Telemaco with five more in the second. But the Phillies rallied
against Allen Levrault, making his second career start.
Lee started the comeback with a two-run homer in the second.
Anderson added a two-run homer later in the inning, cutting the
deficit to 8-4.
Abreu's solo shot made it 8-5 in the third. But Burnitz answered
with a run-scoring double in the fourth off Nelson Figueroa that
gave the Brewers a 9-5 lead.
The Phillies chased Levrault in the fourth after Hunter hit a
three-run homer that cut it to 9-8.
Brandon Kolb entered the game, allowed a single to Doug
Glanville and walked Rollins. Glanville scored the tying run when
Hernandez made a wild throw to first while trying to turn a double
play on a grounder by Abreu.
Levrault allowed eight runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Telemaco gave up seven runs and eight hits in 1 1/3 innings. He
remained 4-0, but his earned-run average rose from 3.18 to 4.61.
Burnitz gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI double in
the first. Sexson followed with a two-run homer.
Houston made it 4-0 with a bases-loaded single in the second and
White followed with his second grand slam of the season.
Game notes Phillies third-base coach John Vukovich returned to
Veterans Stadium on Tuesday, one week after surgery to remove part
of a benign tumor from his head. Vukovich said he feels good and is
looking forward to returning to the team. ... Phillies C Mike
Lieberthal, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right
knee in a game Saturday night, said he will get another opinion
Wednesday. Team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti recommended
season-ending reconstructive surgery. ... Houston now is 7-for-10
against Telemaco, including two hits Tuesday.
