Salo's 30 saves preserve win

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- In Anson Carter's brief time with the Edmonton Oilers, he's managed to fit right in on the top line.

Carter, who replaced Bill Guerin alongside Doug Weight and Ryan Smyth, scored two goals and assisted on one by Weight in a 3-2 victory Saturday night over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Teemu Selanne
The Oilers defense held Anaheim's Teemu Selanne to just one point Saturday.

"I'm so much more comfortable with those guys out there," said Carter, who was traded by Boston on Nov. 15 in the deal that sent Guerin to the Bruins. "They do a great job of handling the puck, and I just try and read off of them."

Tony Hrkac and Oleg Tverdovsky scored for Anaheim.

Tommy Salo made 30 saves to help the Oilers improve to 6-0-1 in their last seven games at Skyreach Centre. Edmonton is 9-2-3 overall at home this season.

Carter opened the scoring at 6:08 of the first period when he intercepted Jim Cummins' clearing attempt and beat goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

"The goalie came out and I just faked him with the forehand, and went to the backhand," Carter said. "It all came from Dougie. He did a great job on the forecheck."

Carter struck again in the final minute of the second period, beating Giguere between the legs to give Edmonton a 3-1 lead. Weight was credited with an assist, his 31st point of the season.

After failing to earn a point in his first three games for Edmonton, Carter has three goals and two assists in his last two. He scored the winning goal in Edmonton's 5-3 win in Ottawa on Thursday night.

"Anson's hands, right from the start, were pretty good," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "Normally that's the aspect of somebody's game that struggles. Now he's getting up to speed. He and Dougie and Ryan are starting to get some chemistry and get some familiarity with one another."

The Oilers managed just four shots in the first period and six in the second. Penalty killing -- and Salo -- gave them a chance to win.

"He's playing really good right now," Tverdovsky said. "Our first couple of power plays, we had good chances and good shots on goal. He was solid, and he didn't really give us anything."

After denying Anaheim during a lengthy two-man disadvantage, Edmonton grabbed the lead on Carter's goal soon after killing the penalty. Minutes later, the Oilers killed another minor, and Weight scored his eighth of the season.

The Ducks were 1-for-9 on the power play and lost their third straight game.

"We played a pretty solid hockey game and, in this league, some nights you play good and you don't get rewarded for it," Anaheim coach Craig Hartsburg said. "We just have to stick with it.

"We're at the point where we think we're playing the way we want to play. Now we've got to keep pushing."

Game notes
Giguere's last NHL victory was Dec. 29, 1999, against Anaheim, when Giguere was a member of the Calgary Flames ... Edmonton and Anaheim split two earlier games, with the Mighty Ducks winning 3-2 in Anaheim on Oct. 27 and the Oilers taking a 5-3 decision three days later at the Skyreach Centre.
