Bure's streak reaches five games

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- It was no surprise that Pavel Bure beat the Tampa Bay Lightning.

In 14 games against Tampa, Bure has 12 goals and 25 points. Bure continued his success when he scored with 2:13 left in overtime as the Florida Panthers defeated the Lightning 2-1 on Saturday night.

Greg Adams dropped a pass to Bure, whose slap shot deflected off the pad of goalie Dan Cloutier. It was Bure's 13 goal this season and extended his scoring streak to five games.

"I didn't know who passed it to me," Bure said, "but it was a great pass play. There were so many people in front of me I just shot it."

Cloutier was impressed by the effort.

"Bure made a nice play," Cloutier said. "The puck went off somebody. It was going to my glove side and then tipped off someone."

The Panthers were winless in 12 previous overtime games (0-7-5), but Florida had not lost to the Lightning at home since April 10, 1996.

"It feels good to get a win at home here," Panthers coach Terry Murray said, "and an overtime win is very nice. I think the guys worked real hard here in the last couple of games."

Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo notched his first win with Florida.

"Can I say, 'Finally?'" Luongo asked. "It was a good effort by everyone tonight. Even if I didn't get the win, I was going to try to keep the tie. It's a happy moment right now."

Luongo's record improved to 1-7-2.

"It's great to see him get a win," Murray said. "We just hadn't been able to find a way to score enough for him to find that first 'W"'.

Tampa Bay scored first after Martin St. Louis intercepted a back-hand pass from Florida's Todd Simpson at the top of the zone and skated in alone on Luongo. After faking a back-hand shot, St. Louis shot the puck in to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead at 2:18 of the first period.

The Lightning wouldn't take another shot on goal until the 13:10 mark of the period.

Florida tied it 1-1 at 9:53 of the period. Cloutier stopped consecutive shots by Anders Eriksson and Peter Worrell, but Denis Shvidki finally got the rebound and poked in the puck from the front of the crease.

In a scoreless second period, Florida's Olli Jokinen received a five-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct after he drove Sheldon Keefe into the glass while Keefe was trying to dig the puck off the boards.

Keefe left the game bleeding, but returned in the third period with 15 stitches in his forehead.

The Panthers compounded the error by failing to put a replacement in the penalty box, forcing them to play short-handed for 39 seconds after the penalty expired. The Lightning managed only one shot during the long power play.

The Lightning picked up one point with the tie to share first place with Carolina in the Southeast Division.

"When you lose in overtime on the road, you take the point," Lightning coach Steve Ludzik said. "We played well. We played hard. I couldn't ask for anything more."

Florida continued its futility on power plays, failing to score on five attempts and taking only three shots. The Panthers are 1-for-49 with the man-advantage over the past 10 games.
