Turek helps stymie Coyotes' power play

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Roman Turek had his second dominant outing in as many days and Scott Young ended an eight-game goal drought with his 14th as the St. Louis Blues beat Phoenix 5-1 Saturday night.

Turek made 25 saves after stopping 28 shots Friday night in a 4-0 victory in Nashville. The Blues' defense also had a strong effort, limiting the Coyotes to two shots during a four-minute power play after Jamal Mayers was whistled for charging goalie Robert Esche early in the third period.

Young, who led the NHL in goals earlier this season, scored for the first time since Nov. 2 to give the Blues a 4-0 second-period lead. Lubos Bartecko scored for the third straight game as the Blues raised their home record to 9-1-1.

St. Louis lost for the first time at the Savvis Center on Tuesday, 4-3 to Vancouver. The Blues entered the game second overall in the NHL and are 15-4-3 for 33 points.

Chris Joseph scored his first goal of the season on a 2-on-1 short-handed break with Keith Tkachuk at 8:13 of the third as the Coyotes averted a shutout. Phoenix, playing the first game of a three-game trip, has lost three in a row.

The Coyotes have been outscored 14-4 during the slump although they got back defenseman Teppo Numminen, who had missed two games with a bruised foot, on Saturday.

Handzus got his fourth goal and Bartecko his fourth in a 36-second span of the first period. Handzus took two swipes at the puck on a rebound in front before beating Esche at 9:36. Bartecko made it 2-0 when he slipped in a backhand shot at 10:12.

Finley scored on a shot from the point at 13:41 that appeared to deflect off a skate in front, and Young got his first goal since Nov. 2 when he converted a setup from behind the net by Pavol Demitra at 15:52.

Tyson Nash scored his third goal from in front on Turgeon's second straight set-up with 1:02 to play.

Esche has had trouble facing the Blues. He was in the nets for a 6-0 loss Dec. 21, 1999.
