You might have missed it, but Major League Soccer's New York/New Jersey MetroStars recently unveiled a new logo for the 2003 season.
Rather than the American style logo used since the club's inception, the MetroStars have shifted to a more traditional "football" crest. "Our motivation in changing our logo, and our visual look, was to immediately have them both communicate 'soccer,' " MetroStars executive vice president John Guppy said in a news release.
According to the team, the three-sided shield represents the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Within the four quadrants that feature the teams red-and-black colors are a soccer ball, the team's red-and-black uniform stripes and a star to signify "MetroStars as well as excellence." Hmmmm .... New York/New Jersey finished 11-15-2 and out of the playoffs this season.
