DENVER (AP) -- Chris Carrieri scored a goal in the 87th minute as
the Colorado Rapids earned a playoff spot with a 3-2 victory over
the Dallas Burn Sunday night.
Chris Henderson and Zach Kingsley added a goal each for the
Rapids, who needed three points to secure a playoff spot. Colorado
(12-11-3) had lost two of its previous three games.
Eddie Johnson and Antonio Martinez scored goals for Dallas
(11-7-7), which lost for only the second time in its last six
games.
Carlos Valderrama set up the winning score with a return feed to
Carrieri. Carrieri broke to the net and beat Dallas goalkepper Matt
Jordan for his 11th goal of the year.
The Rapids led 2-1 at halftime on Henderson's goal off a penalty
kick and Kingsley's third goal of the year. Henderson was awarded
the penalty kick when Lee Morrison was called for a handball in the
12th minute.
Kinsgley sent a shot over the left leg of Jordan from 15 yards
out in the 21st minute. Johnson got the Burn on the board in the
34th minute with a header, converting a long cross from Ronnie
O'Brien.
Kingsley hit the crossbar from 30 yards out in the 66th minute,
and a minute later Martinez tied it at 2. Bobby Rhine set up
Martinez's third goal of the year with a long cross pass. Rapids
goalkeeper David Kramer could only wave as Martinez's shot went
past him.
