MONTREAL (AP) Matt Williams and the Arizona Diamondbacks keep
piling up home runs.
| | | Matt Williams is congratulated by teammate Jay Bell after homering off the Expos' Britt Reames. |
Jay Bell hit a two-run homer in the first and Williams added a
three-run shot one inning later for his 350th career homer as
Arizona defeated the Montreal Expos 8-3 Tuesday night.
"I got the ball," Williams said. "It's cool. It's a nice
thing to happen."
The game drew 4,340 the smallest crowd at Olympic Stadium for
an Expos' game since drawing 4,262 on Oct. 3, 1990. Expos owner
Jeffrey Loria was on hand for the game and he offered, via a
scoreboard announcement, a free ticket to each of the fans for any
of the five remaining games on the homestand.
After hitting 44 homers in April to tie a team record, the
Diamondbacks kept on slugging, building a quick eight-run lead for
Curt Schilling (4-0), who gave up a three-run homer to Vladimir
Guerrero in the fourth.
"He got a pitch that he could handle and it was no surprise to
me that he knew what to do with it," Diamondbacks manager Bob
Brenly said of Williams. "We had a lot of hard-hit balls in that
game tonight. Some of them got results, and some of them got
caught, but most of the guys had at least a couple of good at-bats
tonight."
Schilling allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings,
walked one and struck out two, increasing his total to 52, second
in the NL behind teammate Randy Johnson (61).
"The lead allowed me to throw some curveballs for the first
time in a game this year," Schilling said. "I threw an extended
amount of them, which was a really good thing. It's another pitch
now that I think I'm going to be able to take out with me every
fifth day and be confident in throwing."
Schilling has just four walks in 45 1/3 innings. His lone walk
Tuesday was to Fernando Tatis, who scored when Guerrero homered on
the next pitch.
"I thought I threw the ball pretty decently tonight,"
Schilling said. "Except for a sequence of hitters, it was a pretty
good game."
The game drew just 78 more than the crowd of 4,262 that
witnessed the 1990 season finale. The smallest crowd in Olympic
Stadium history was 2,803 on Sept. 27, 1984.
Montreal lost its third straight and 14th in 19, falling to
11-15 after a 6-1 start.
The Expos have drawn 130,041 through their first 10 home games.
Not counting the crowd of 45,183 for the home opener on April 6,
the Expos have drawn 84,858 for nine games, an average of 9,429.
Montreal has failed to reach 1 million in attendance in each of
the last three seasons.
Britt Reames (2-2), facing the Diamondbacks for the first time,
allowed eight runs and seven hits in 1 1/3 innings. His ERA soared
from 3.33 to 5.72.
"It's tough when you put your team down, 8-0," Reames said.
"It's tough on me and it's tough on the guys who are playing. It
puts those guys in a hole and it's just no fun trying to play
catch-up when you're eight runs down."
Steve Finley singled leading off the first and Bell battled
Reames, homering on the 11th pitch of his at-bat. Reggie Sanders
added an RBI grounder later in the inning.
Luis Gonzalez hit a two-run single in a five-run third that also
included Williams' fourth homer.
