Pedro: 8-0, 0.89 ERA vs. Mariners
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SEATTLE (AP) – So much for warming up.

Pedro Martinez
Pedro Martinez shook off his warm-up woes to shut down the Mariners ... again.

Pedro Martinez thought he didn't have anything in the bullpen Tuesday night.

He then allowed three hits in eight innings and struck out 12 to lead the Boston Red Sox over the Seattle Mariners 2-0.

"It's probably the worst time I had this year," Martinez said. "I just wanted to start the game and see what was going to happen because I didn't feel comfortable at all. I was a little bit upset with myself, and I needed a little kick in my behind by myself."

Martinez (3-0) walked four, improving to 8-0 with a 0.89 ERA in eight appearances against Seattle. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the fourth time this season and the 73rd time in his career.

"Everything was just wrong," he said. "My breaking ball wouldn't break, my fastball wouldn't go, my body was tight, I didn't feel the ball right."

Martinez hit Edgar Martinez on the back of the batting helmet with a slow curveball in the first inning and plate umpire Joe Brinkman went to the mound to warn him not to do it again.

Manager Jimy Williams came out of the dugout to monitor the conversation.

"It's not going to change Pedro's approach to pitching," Williams said. "So a pitch got away -- a breaking ball."

Rolando Arrojo pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save in four chances.

After a 20-4 start, the Mariners have lost two straight for the first time this season. They were blanked for the first time since last Aug. 15 against Detroit's Steve Sparks.

Seattle, scoreless in its last 15 innings, had been 16-0 in games started by right-handed opposing pitchers. The Mariners' only hits were singles by Ichiro Suzuki in the third, John Olerud in the fourth and Mark McLemore in the eighth.

Suzuki's hit was a broken-bat nubber that got over Martinez's head and then dropped to the grass in front of shortstop Craig Grebeck.

Suzuki was the only Mariners batter not to strike out against Martinez.

"He's a good pitcher," said Suzuki, who faced Martinez during an All-Star tour of Japan five years ago. "He has every kind of thing that pitchers have to have: a good fastball, a good breaking ball. Plus he's got a good pickoff move."

Seattle loaded the bases in the fourth when Martinez walked Edgar Martinez and Al Martin around Olerud's single.

But Edgar Martinez was thrown out at the plate on Tom Lampkin's grounder to first, and David Bell struck out swinging on a 98 mph fastball with a 3-2 count.

Mike Cameron struck out three times against Martinez.

"He had some nasty stuff today," Cameron said. "He has a 97 mph fastball and an 86 mph changeup. He threw some great pitches and he was able to shut us down." Manny Ramirez hit an RBI single in the sixth off John Halama (2-2), then had a run-scoring double in the eighth that drove in Jose Offerman, who reached on a throwing error by shortstop Carlos Guillen.

Halama gave up seven hits in eight innings, struck out five and walked none.
