Glaus shows signs of shrugging off slump
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Troy Glaus is getting his hits when they matter most.

Glaus went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI Tuesday night and Pat Rapp earned his first victory in six starts with Anaheim as the Angels beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4.

The defending AL home run champ leads the Angels with seven homers and 17 RBI despite a .250 batting average.

"Troy has not really been in his groove the last two weeks, and I think his average paid a price," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He got off to a great start, and he had a little trouble maintaining it. But this guy is certainly dangerous at any time. So don't be misled by his average."

It's usually been all or nothing for Glaus, who was third in the league with 163 strikeouts last year despite hitting 47 homers and batting .284. He singled home a run in the first inning, drove in another with a third-inning double over the head of left fielder Carlos Lee, and greeted reliever Lorenzo Barcelo with a leadoff homer in the eighth.

"Anybody who's not doing what they think they can do is definitely going to start pressing," Glaus said. "You've just got to go back to the basics, go back to what you know works, and know that at some point it's going to change."

Rapp allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. The right-hander, pitching for his sixth team in five seasons after signing as a free agent, allowed fewer than four earned runs for only the second time this season.

The defending AL Central champion White Sox lost for the 12th time in 16 games.

"They're a good team," Angels outfielder Garret Anderson said. "Those guys over there are very good hitters and the hit the ball everywhere, so they're going to be fine. It's just nice to catch them when they're not super, super hot."

Anaheim built a 4-0 lead after three innings against David Wells (2-3), who allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings.

"He keeps us in the ballgame every time he goes out there, but we didn't score enough runs to get him the victory," Lee said.

Anderson singled home the Angels' first run ahead of Glaus' RBI single. Anaheim added two more in the third when Shawn Wooten followed Glaus' RBI double with a sacrifice fly.

Paul Konerko and Harold Baines singled with two outs in the fourth and both scored on Lee's double. Jose Valentin made it 4-3 with a leadoff homer in the sixth, and Rapp lasted just two more batters.

"Rapp was good enough that we couldn't hit him," Lee said. "He was spotting his pitches pretty good. But when we got to the point where we figured him out, they got him out of there."

After Glaus's homer into the left-field bullpen, pinch-hitter Wally Joyner tripled to right-center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Benji Gil to make it 6-3.

Troy Percival got his fifth save despite allowing an unearned run in the ninth on second baseman David Eckstein's double error.

Konerko's hit extended his hitting streak to 13 games, matching a career best. He has reached base in all 23 games -- the longest streak to start a season for the White Sox since 1996, when Frank Thomas reached in the first 52 games.

Thomas missed his third straight game because of strained right triceps. He hopes to be back in the lineup Wednesday.

Game notes
Jim Parque, whose sore left shoulder has contributed to an 8.04 ERA and a demotion to the bullpen, will be placed on the DL Wednesday and RHP Jon Garland will be recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. ... Tuesday marked the 50th anniversary of the debut of the White Sox's first black player, Minnie Minoso, who still works for the club as a community relations representative. ... Wells had gone nine innings in his previous two games. No White Sox pitcher has thrown nine innings in three consecutive outings since Jack McDowell in 1994.
