CHICAGO (AP) Nothing went right for the Chicago Cubs.
| | | Ben Davis is congratulated by teammates Ryan Klesko, left, Phil Nevin (23) and Santiago Perez (1) after his third-inning grand slam. |
Ben Davis hit a grand slam, Phil Nevin added a three-run shot
and Cubs reliever Mike Fyhrie broke his left arm when he was hit by the barrel of a broken bat in Chicago's 10-3 loss to the San Diego
Padres on Tuesday night.
"You see a lot of bats break every night, but usually you don't
see a bat hit a player," Cubs manager Don Baylor said. "He told
me he put his hands up to protect his face. It's unfortunate."
Mark Kotsay went 3-for-5 in his return from the disabled list
and Rickey Henderson reached base three times for the Padres, who
have won four of five, outscoring opponents 35-8 over the last five
games.
"We're getting some big hits and not leaving guys on base as we
had done," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "Anything can happen
here (at Wrigley), and tonight the wind was blowing out (21 mph to
center at game time) so it looked like it was going to be high
scoring."
Taking advantage of starter Jason Bere's wildness, San Diego
scored seven runs in the third inning before making an out.
Pitcher Brian Tollberg (2-2) led off with a single and Henderson
drew a walk. Kotsay, playing for the first time since April 16, hit
a bloop RBI double down the left-field line, scoring Tollberg. Bere
then walked Ryan Klesko to load the bases and also issued free
passes to Nevin and Mike Darr, forcing in a pair of runs to make it
3-0.
Davis then hit Bere's 3-2 pitch over the stands in right for his
third home run of the year and first career grand slam to make it
7-0.
Davis' ball didn't appear to need a push from the wind.
"I think I got that one," Davis said. "I don't hit them very
often. I'm not worried about power right now. Just working on the
stroke."
Bere (3-1) allowed seven runs, five hits and four walks in
two-plus innings. Bere came in with a 2.28 lifetime ERA in seven
career starts at Wrigley Field and was 2-0 with a 1.93 at home this
year.
"That inning came out of nowhere," Baylor said. "When the
wind is blowing out you can't afford to walk people. I tried to
give him a chance to get out of it because he's been our best
pitcher this year."
With two outs in the fourth, Nevin homered to left off Fyhrie to
make it 10-0. Nevin had four RBI, and is hitting .439 with four
homers and 15 RBIs in his last 10 games.
One batter later, Fyhrie was struck in the left arm by the
barrel of Santiago Perez's bat. Fyhrie was taken to the hospital
and will be out at least eight weeks.
"It's scary. I've taken three balls off my leg the last couple
outings," Tollberg said. "And I wasn't able to react to them. I
hope he'll be OK."
In the fifth, Bill Mueller who tied a career-best by going
4-for-4 hit a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Damon Buford,
to get the Cubs on the board.
Julio Zuleta added a two-run homer in the seventh, his third, to
make it 10-3.
Tollberg allowed three runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
"He pitched well in Colorado, too" Bochy said. "He doesn't
let the environment bother him."
Game notes
Kotsay, who had been on the DL with a sore left quadriceps,
was activated before the game. ... Darr, who missed the three
previous games with a sore back, strained his left oblique muscle
while batting in the third and left the game. Santiago Perez took
his place in the right field. Darr will be re-evaluated Wednesday.
... Damian Jackson hit the Padres' last grand slam, Aug. 22, 2000.
... The Cubs activated reliever Tom Gordon and sent down rookie
reliever Courtney Duncan. ... Duncan is likely to be recalled when
Fyhrie is placed on the disabled list.
