GAME LOG
BALTIMORE (AP) Jerry Hairston hit a two-run homer and three Baltimore pitchers combined on a four-hitter Tuesday night in a 3-1 victory over the sinking Tampa Bay Devil Rays. By taking the first two games of the series, the Orioles now have their second winning streak of the season. Baltimore won three straight April 22-25, a run that began with a victory over the Devil Rays. Hairston, who entered with a .190 batting average, hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to put the Orioles up 2-0. Both his home runs this season have come off Bryan Rekar (0-4). Hairston also doubled off Rekar in the seventh and scored on a single by Brady Anderson to make it 3-1. It was his second straight multihit game and third of the season. Orioles starter Jason Johnson (2-2) allowed three hits and an unearned run in 5 2/3 innings. Both his wins this season have come against his former team. Mike Trombley gave up one hit in 2 1/3 innings and Ryan Kohlmeier pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save, the second in two nights. Russ Johnson drove in the lone run for the Devil Rays, who have lost five of six to fall a season-worst 11 games under .500. Baltimore loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning before Rekar retired Hairston on a routine fly ball. The Orioles' No. 9 hitter made amends in his next at-bat, driving a 2-0 pitch into the left-field seats after Melvin Mora led off with a walk. The Devil Rays closed the gap in the sixth but missed a solid chance to knot the score. After Cal Ripken botched a grounder to third and Russ Johnson hit a one-out triple to make it 2-1, Jason Johnson struck out Ben Grieve. Trombley then walked Greg Vaughn before Fred McGriff hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice. Vinny Castilla led off the Tampa Bay seventh with a double but did not advance. Game notesVaughn, who went 0-for-3 with a walk, is in an 0-for-18 funk. He struck out once, raising his total to an AL-high 35. ... Johnson needed 26 pitches to get out of the first inning. ... Although Ripken's error led to a run, he went 1-for-3 with a walk and made a nice play on a smash by Vaughn to end the eighth. | OTHER GAMES Baseball Scoreboard Tampa Bay Clubhouse Baltimore Clubhouse RECAPS Baltimore 3 Tampa Bay 1
