1989: Canes earn redemption against ND

No. 7 Miami (9-1) led No. 1 Notre Dame 17-10, but the opening possession of the third quarter looked as if it might swing the momentum toward the Irish and their 23-game win streak. A personal foul and a backward fumble helped put the Canes in a third-and-44 at their own 7. But quarterback Craig Erickson threw deep to Randal Hill, who raced past two Irish defenders and got the first down. Miami won 27-10 and went on to win its third national title of the decade, and first under new coach Dennis Erickson. -- Maisel
