Prada defeats Sweden's Victory, GBR of Britain

Associated Press

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Defending Louis Vuitton champion Prada increased its second-round winning streak to six matches with wins Thursday over Sweden's Victory and GBR of Britain in America's Cup challenger racing off Auckland.

The Italian syndicate, which challenged Team New Zealand for the America's Cup two years ago, edged Victory by 10 seconds in the morning and beat the British by 16 seconds in the afternoon.

Prada had begun the second round with four points, in sixth place in the nine-team competition. After making major changes to Luna Rossa between rounds, Prada has joined Seattle's OneWorld in second place behind the Swiss syndicate Alinghi.

OneWorld had a rare loss Thursday -- its second in 12 starts -- in an all-American clash with Oracle of San Francisco.

The Seattle yacht recovered to beat Victory by 21 seconds in the afternoon, while Oracle had its afternoon race postponed because Le Defi of France sustained gear damage in its morning race.

Alinghi beat New York's Stars & Stripes by 49 seconds after a morning bye to remain atop the standings with 12 wins in 13 races.

OneWorld has 11 wins in 13 starts but had a point deducted by a race arbitration panel for a pre-regatta rules violation and tied at 10 points with Prada, which has 10 wins in 14 starts.

In morning matches, GBR beat Mascalzone Latino of Italy by 1:40, the largest winning margin of the day; Oracle beat OneWorld by 40 seconds; Prada beat Victory; and Stars & Stripes beat Le Defi by 1:12.

All wins in the first and second rounds count for one point. The top eight teams after the second round advance to the quarterfinals.

The winner of the challenger series will face Team New Zealand for the America's Cup in February, 2003.

Oracle enjoyed a sweeping change of fortunes against OneWorld.

Despite being penalized in an intense pre-start encounter and having to perform a penalty turn, Oracle led most of the race.

Both boats were over the startline early and had to go back to start again. Oracle was also penalized when it failed to give OneWorld clearance in a duel near the committee boat.

Only a week ago Oracle had lost four of its five most recent starts and Larry Ellison, CEO of the Oracle corporation, had replaced skipper and helmsman Peter Holmberg with New Zealander Chris Dickson.

Dickson is still in charge, match racing world champion Holmberg is back on the boat and Ellison has been asked to step aside.
