College basketball fans exhausted by NCAA Tournament fever are having their
spirits renewed as prospects begin making final decisions during the Spring
Signing Period, which began April 12 and lasts until May 15.
The last "big-name" player still undecided is forward Darius Rice of Jackson-Lanier, Miss., a McDonald's All American who is considering Kentucky, Memphis, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Miami (Fla.). The 6-foot-10 standout, who averaged 23 points, eight rebounds and three blocks as a senior, cancelled an April 7 announcement. Three other McDonald's All Americans remain unsigned. Forward Travon Bryant of Long Beach-Jordan, Calif., has dropped Kansas and is considering California or Missouri. Forward/center Garner Meads of Salt Lake City-Brighton, Utah, is looking at BYU, Stanford and Utah. Meads is expected to go on a two-year mission before attending college. Swingman Jerome Harper of Columbia-W.J. Keenan, S.C., is expected to attend prep school or junior college. Guard/forwards Andre Emmett of Dallas-Carter, Tex., and Mikey Marshall of Tulia, Tex., both 6-foot-5, have both signed with Texas Tech. Hot-shooting guard Jannero Pargo of Chicago, Ill./Neosho CC, Kan., has signed with Arkansas. Pargo, who averaged 23 points, drew interest from Kentucky, Georgia and Fordham. Guard Sherrod Teasley of Middleburg-Notre Dame Academy, Va., chose Tulane. Virginia Commonwealth signed guard Johnnie Strong of Hampton, Va. Georgia Tech has reportedly released guard Brendan Plavich of Dalton, Ga., from his letter-of-intent. Boston College has signed Andrew Bryant, a forward from Denison, Tex. Guard Andre Collins of Crisfield, Md., has committed to Maryland over UMass, Miami-Florida and Ohio State. Temple committed high-scoring guard Brian Polk of Georgetown-Sussex Tech, Del., over Rutgers and American. Polk averaged 31.6 points as a senior. Junior forward Jimmy Motz of Lincoln-Northeast, Neb., chose Creighton. Forward/guard James Davis of Detroit/Murray-Wright, Mich., will play at TCU over Detroit, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Western Michigan. Forward Jackie Rogers of Barton County CC, Kan., signed with UMass. San Diego State signed guard Karlo Kovacic of Rijeka, Croatia/Modesto College, Calif. Guard Ryan Lowery of Gastonia, N.C., has signed with Florida State over interest from Utah, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Clemson and Virginia Tech. Auburn signed guard Lincoln Glass of South Bend, Ind./Lincoln Trail College, Ill., over Bowling Green and Dayton. Sources now deny reports of a commitment by Ermal Kuqo, a center from Albania/Fort Scott CC, Kan., to the Tigers. Auburn leads Arizona, Oklahoma, Dayton and Tulsa. Forward Eric Collier of Marshalltown CC, Iowa, is headed for Idaho. South Alabama has added guard/forward Emmitt Thomas of Birmingham-John Carroll, Ala. Center Chavis Thompson of Florence-Wilson, S.C., committed to Georgia State. Charles Cranford, of Bayside-Cardozo, N.Y./Coffeyville CC, Kan., picked Northeastern. Reported transfers:
Arizona has verballed Travis Hanour, a senior guard/forward from Laguna Beach, Calif., who had once committed to USC. Hanour had also considered Oregon State. Forward/center Chris Manker of Laguna Beach, Calif., has chosen Oregon State. Minnesota gained forward Travarus Bennett of Southwest Missouri State-West Plains JC, Mo. Will Campbell, a forward from Chipola JC, Fla., has committed to UAB. Campbell had earlier verballed to Rutgers, Wyoming and Idaho. He was also looking at UNC-Charlotte and Oklahoma. Senior guard/forward Asa Woods of Dora, Ala., verballed to UAB on Tuesday over interest from Alabama, Florida State, Arkansas, Iowa State and Houston. Forward Drago Pavlovic from Belgrade, Yugoslavia/Ft. Myers-Mariner, Fla./Coraopolis-Cornell, Pa., has committed to Long Beach State. Guard Von Damien Green from New York-LaSalle, N.Y./San Jacinto JC, Tex., is headed for Manhattan. Outstanding senior forward Ellis Myles of Compton-Centennial, Calif., has committed to Louisville over interest from UConn, Iowa State and Memphis. Myles averaged 24 points and 14 rebounds as a senior. Iowa State has added forward Omar Bynum of Omaha-North, Neb./Indian Hills CC, Iowa; and guard/forward Marcus Jefferson of East Chicago-Central, Ind./Notre Dame Prep, Mass./Providence College. Guard Thomas Watkins of Phoenix, Ariz./Mesa CC, Ariz., who played in only six games at Iowa State, will transfer. Forward Zeke Johnson of Baltimore-Southern, Md./Maine Central Institute, Me., committed to New Mexico. Greg Rector, a senior forward from Gaithersburg-Quince Orchard, Md., pledged to Holy Cross. Dayton has verbals from guard Ramod Marshall of Charlotte-Garinger, N.C./Fork Union MA, Va./Bridgton Academy, Me.; forward Lamar Hill of Roanoke, Ala./Tyler JC, Tex; and forward Jason Osborne of Harlem-Rice, N.Y./Towson-Catholic, Md. Senior guard Micah McKinney of Compton-Dominquez, Calif., is set for Pepperdine. Pacific gains guards Jono Metzger-Jones of West Valley College, Calif., and Maurice McLemore of Solano Community College, Calif. Senior guard Lafonte Johnson of Baltimore-Dunbar, Md./York-Crispus Attucks, Pa., committed to UNLV. Decision-making:
Erik Daniels, a senior forward from Cincinnati-Princeton, Ohio, is considering Clemson, Kentucky, Michigan, Temple, Xavier, Boston College, Georgetown and Kansas. Senior forward/center Darius Manciel of Detroit-Pershing, Mich., likes Ohio State and TCU. Others showing interest are Michigan, Iowa, Florida, West Virginia and Fordham. Forward John Grice of Shelby State JC, Tenn., is being sought by Kentucky and Memphis. Others are Mississippi State, Arkansas and Florida State. Outstanding senior guard Brandon Brooks of Portland-Jefferson, Ore., is considering Arizona State, Cincinnati and UCLA.
