Top Georgia guard headed for Kentucky

The Kentucky Wildcats have added an outstanding shooting guard as college basketball programs continue to battle for talent during the spring signing period.

Gerald Fitch of Macon-Westside, Ga., who averaged 26.5 points as a senior, picked Kentucky over Clemson, followed by Florida State. Others were Auburn, Alabama and Georgia Tech.

"Kentucky was the best choice for me," Fitch said. "I am very happy with my decision. I had some great schools interested in me, but Kentucky stood out from all of them."

Kentucky is believed to have two scholarships remaining after receiving a commitment from Fitch. Forward Darius Rice of Jackson-Lanier, Miss., the last "big-name" player still undecided this spring, has not announced between Kentucky, Memphis, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Miami (Fla.). Rice, a 6-10 forward, averaged 23 points, eight rebounds and three blocks as a senior.

John Grice, a forward/guard from Shelby State JC, Tenn., and Erik Daniels, a senior forward from Cincinnati-Princeton, Ohio, have both visited Lexington. Kentucky had cancelled Grice's visit, but then reconsidered. Daniels, who is also considering Temple, Michigan, Clemson and Xavier, may make an announcement shortly. Grice is also looking at Memphis or Mississippi.

Center John Toombs of York-Crispus Attucks Youth Build, Pa., signed with the Georgia Bulldogs over Tulane and Villanova.

Center Ermal Kuqo of Tirana, Albania/Fort Scott JC, Kan., has signed with Tulsa over Auburn, Arizona, Oklahoma and Dayton. Kuqo, once rumored headed for Auburn, averaged 15 points and 9.4 rebounds last season. His father was one of Albania's greatest players.

Senior forward/center Darius Manciel of Detroit-Pershing, Mich., has reportedly chosen TCU over interest from West Virginia and Iowa. The Horned Frogs also added center/forward Percy Green of Oklahoma City-Western Heights, Okla./Seminole State College, Okla.

Four members of Southeastern CC, Iowa, which won the NJCAA National Championship, have made decisions, as forward Johnnie Selvie signed with UConn over South Florida and Louisville; guard Monte Cummings chose Florida State over Georgia; forward Carl Pullian signed with Chattanooga; and guard Curtis McFall chose Wichita State.

Among other top prospects, outstanding senior guard Brandon Brooks of Portland-Jefferson, Ore., has signed with Arizona State. Others were Oklahoma and UCLA. Cincinnati had been dropped.

In a huge boost for the Rutgers program, Eddie Starks, a top national-quality senior guard from Miami-Northwest Christian, Fla., has committed to the Scarlet Knights over Kansas State and UNLV.

Touted center Mark McCarroll of New York-Christ the King, N.Y./Milford Academy, Conn., and the top scorer among junior colleges, forward Zelimir Stevanovic of Belgrade, Yugoslavia/Gulf Coast CC, Fla., are headed for Pittsburgh. McCarroll, who had signed with Syracuse last year but did not qualify, also looked at Texas, Villanova and Utah. Stevanovic averaged 30.3 points for Gulf Coast and considered Miami, Providence, Cleveland State, Utah and the USC Trojans.

Decision-making:
If qualified, forward Trevon Bryant of Long Beach-Jordan, Calif., is considering Missouri (probable), California and Kansas (no longer recruiting heavily).

Forward/center Garner Meads of Salt Lake City-Brighton, Utah, is looking at BYU, Stanford and Utah. Meads is expected to go on a two-year mission before attending college.
