READING, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Rusty McNamara's three-run
homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the
Reading Phillies past the Akron Aeros, 8-5. McNamara, who
singled in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to 12
games, capped a four-run ninth inning for Reading. Pinch-runner
Brian Harris stole second and scored on an error by relief
pitcher Marc Deschenes to trigger the ninth-inning rally. Gary
Burnham launched a two-run blast and Eric Valent went 1-for-3 to
hit safely in 18 straight games for the Phillies, who improved
to 15-10 on the season. Ryan Jones smacked a leadoff homer,
Chris Coste legged out an RBI triple and Joe DePippo drilled a
two-run shot in a four-run eighth inning for Akron, which has
dropped five of its last seven contests. Mike Edwards went
2-for-5 to lenghten his hitting streak to 14 games for the
Aeros, who trailed, 4-1, after four innings. John Daniels (4-1)
gave up two hits and one run in 1 2/3 innings of relief but was
credited with the win. Losing pitcher Deschenes (2-2)
surrendered one hit and four runs -- three earned -- while
recording just two outs.
