Buchanan's eighth-inning HR is the difference
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Brian Buchanan once again was the right person in the right place.

Brian Buchanan
Brian Buchanan hit his second pinch-hit homer of the year Wednesday.

Buchanan connected for a pinch-hit home run leading off the eighth inning Wednesday night, lifting the Minnesota Twins over the Boston Red Sox 4-3.

"Got lucky twice, I guess," said the reserve outfielder, who had a pinch-hit homer earlier this season against Kansas City. "Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't."

Buchanan hit the first pitch thrown by Pete Schourek into the left-field seats as the Twins overcame an early 3-0 deficit for the win.

"Give him a lot of credit, he really laid the wood on that one," Twins manager Tom Kelly. "Occasionally you do something right."

Schourek (0-2) threw only one bad pitch, but it was enough.

"I wanted to make a better pitch than that, not give him something to handle," said Schourek.

Bob Wells (3-0) got one out for the win, and LaTroy Hawkins pitched the ninth for his 13 save in 14 chances.

Manny Ramirez drove in two runs with singles in the first and third innings for Boston, giving him 48 RBI in 39 games.

Tim Wakefield held the Twins hitless for 4 2/3 innings in his first start of the season before running into trouble.

With Jacque Jones on first with a walk, Torii Hunter blooped a single to right for the first hit off Wakefield.

A.J. Pierzynski followed with an RBI single and Cristian Guzman tied it at 3 with a two-run triple. Guzman leads the majors with eight triples.

Wakefield gave up three runs, three hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out six, and earned himself another start.

"He's in the rotation," Boston manager Jimy Williams said.

J.C. Romero pitched a season-high seven innings for Minnesota. He gave up two three runs -- two earned -- and six hits. Romero struck out five and walked one.
