GAME LOG
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The night before, it was Adam Piatt. On
Wednesday night, Frank Menechino was Oakland's extra-innings hero.
| | | Barry Zito went six innings for the A's but was long gone by the time Oakland finally won. | Menechino had the game-winning single in the 10th inning as the
Oakland Athletics beat the Yankees 4-3 for New York's third
straight loss.
"There's nothing like beating the champions," Menechino said.
The Yankees, the defending World Series champions, lost three
straight games in extra innings for the first time since April
16-18, 1964.
The A's also have played three straight extra-inning games,
winning two of them.
With one out in the 10th, Ramon Hernandez was hit by a pitch
from Brian Boehringer (0-1), then went to third on Johnny Damon's
double to the right-field corner.
With reigning AL MVP Jason Giambi on deck, the Yankees decided
to pitch to Menechino, who hit a solo homer in the fifth inning.
Menechino hit a drive over left fielder David Justice's head to
score the winning run in front of Oakland's first sellout crowd of
the season. Boehringer had not allowed an earned run in 16 1/3
innings.
Mark Guthrie (3-0) faced just one batter in the top of the
inning to win for the second straight night.
On Tuesday night, Piatt got a 12th inning single as the A's beat
the Yankees 3-2.
"We're struggling right now. Not a lot is happening for us,"
Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Good teams fight through this
stuff. That's what we have to do."
A's manager Art Howe was tossed by third-base umpire Jeff Nelson
in the 10th inning for arguing a call on Clay Bellinger's attempted
bunt. It was the first time he had been ejected this season.
With the A's holding a 3-2 lead in the ninth, Derek Jeter led
off with a double against Jason Isringhausen. He went to third on
Tino Martinez's fly to right, then scored on Jorge Posada's single
to tie the game.
It was Isringhausen's third blown save of the season.
The A's went up 2-0 in the fourth inning. Terrence Long singled
off New York starter Andy Pettitte with two outs, went to second
when Piatt walked, and scored on Eric Chavez's single.
Miguel Tejada's broken-bat infield hit tipped off Pettitte's
glove and fell, allowing Piatt to score.
Menechino's home run to center field put the A's up 3-0.
After Jeter hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning,
A's starter Barry Zito walked Martinez and Posada. David Justice
singled to load the bases and end Zito's night.
Jim Mecir came on and got pinch-hitter Paul O'Neill to hit into
a run-scoring double play and struck out Joe Oliver.
Zito allowed two runs on four hits in six-plus innings. He
struck out six.
Pettitte allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out eight
in eight innings.
"We were able to run on him a little bit -- put some pressure on
him," Howe said about Pettitte. "You know going into the game
they have such a great pitching staff that you have to scratch and
scrape for everything you get, and that's what we did."
The Yankees lost left fielder Chuck Knoblauch after three
innings from a bruise to his left side. Knoblauch was injured
chasing down Piatt's pop to deep left in the second inning. He was
replaced by Michael Coleman.
Torre said Knoblauch likely would not play on Thursday.
Game notes After winning their first 15 games against teams under
.500, the Yankees have lost three straight -- two to Oakland and one
to Baltimore. ... The A's placed DH John Jaha and OF Jeremy Giambi
on the 15-day DL. Oakland activated INF Jose Ortiz from the DL, and
recalled OF Robin Jennings from Triple-A Sacramento. ... Pettitte
was the 18th left-hander the A's have faced this season, most in
the majors. ... The A's drew 43,932 for their first Coliseum
sellout this season. ... The last time the A's played three
extra-inning games in a row was May 25-27, 1997. ... The A's are
5-1 in games in which Menechino has homered.
