Indians overtake Rangers with three-run ninth
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Wil Cordero rediscovered his power stroke just in time for Cleveland.

Cordero's two-run homer in the ninth tied the game, and Jolbert Cabrera added an RBI single as the Indians rallied to beat the Texas Rangers 4-3 Wednesday night and extend their road winning streak to 11 games.

"He picked a good time to hit one," Indians manager Charlie Manuel said. "It looked like got a good ball to hit. He'll get some more."

The Indians trailed 3-1 when Marty Cordova, who had already extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the second, led off the ninth with a single. Cordero followed with his first homer, on a 3-2 pitch off Tim Crabtree (0-2).

Cordero hadn't homered in 257 at-bats, since the last of his 16 homers for Pittsburgh last July 18. Ten days later, he was traded back to the Indians and Wednesday was in his 60th game back with the team he played for in 1999.

"I wasn't really waiting for a good pitch, but was looking for one to drive," Cordero said. "I don't consider myself a home-run hitter."

Russell Branyan then singled, scoring one out later on Cabrera's hit.

Crabtree, who has blown both of his save opportunities since coming off the disabled list May 8, said Cordero hit a fastball "left up and left in the middle of the plate."

Alex Rodriguez homered, tripled, doubled and scored three runs for the Rangers, who have lost 14 of 16.

Rodriguez got a chance to hit for the cycle for the second time in his career, but reached on an error in the eighth. Branyan misplayed the short-hop grounder to third base.

A-Rod hit for the cycle on June 5, 1997, at Detroit while playing for Seattle.

"I'm not surprised by anything he does; he's one of the best players in the game," Texas manager Jerry Narron said.

The Rangers, who managed just three other hits, led 1-0 after Rodriguez hit a two-out solo homer in the first, his 13th of the season and 202nd of his career.

Rodriguez doubled in the fourth and scored on a single by Ruben Sierra to put the Rangers ahead 2-0. After Rodriguez led off the sixth with a triple, Sierra hit a sacrifice fly that gave Texas a 3-1 lead.

"We had a great game until the ninth inning," said Narron, who is 2-9 since taking over after Johnny Oates resigned.

"It was a good victory," Manuel said. "When things are going your way, good things happen for you. It happened for us tonight."

Pat Mahomes, forced into action because of starter Ryan Glynn's blistered finger, pitched 3 2/3 innings. He gave up one run and four hits.

Bartolo Colon struck out 10 against the Rangers for the second time this year. He pitched 7 1-3 innings, coming out of the game after taking Randy Velarde's liner off his right foot in the eighth, and got a no decision.

"He was good except for A-Rod. Outside of that, he did good and stayed after it," Manuel said. "He got hit on the top of his foot. It was time for him to come out anyway."

Paul Shuey (2-1) got the last two outs in the eighth for the victory. Bob Wickman pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

Colon's two walks came back-to-back in the fifth before Velarde grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Glynn left with no outs in the fourth because of a blister on the index finger of his right hand. He had allowed a single to Juan Gonzalez and gone to a 3-0 count against Jim Thome.

Mahomes, who earlier Wednesday had been named the starter for Sunday's game against Toronto to replace demoted Doug Davis in the rotation, threw ball four to Thome. He then got out of the inning when Marty Cordova flied out and Cordero grounded into a double play.

Narron said Mahomes will still make the start against the Blue Jays.

The Indians scored their first run in the sixth after Omar Vizquel led off with a double and Roberto Alomar singled, ending Mahomes' stretch of 11 1/3 scoreless innings.
