GAME LOG
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The back spasms that prevented Scott
Schoeneweis from making his previous scheduled start are gone. So
is Toronto's streak of 11 consecutive games with a home run.
Schoeneweis allowed a run and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings and
did not allow an extra-base hit as the Anaheim Angels beat the Blue
Jays 3-1 Wednesday night.
"I was disappointed to miss that last start," Schoeneweis
said. "I've worked too hard to have something like that occur. It
was just a freak thing, and hopefully that won't happen again. But
it was nice to be back out there after a little bit of a layoff.
"My warmups kind of convinced me that I was OK. I didn't feel
100 percent, as far as my stuff was concerned, and I was a little
rusty. But I battled through it. Once I got through the first
inning, I was fine."
Schoeneweis (3-2), who beat the Blue Jays 6-0 with a
three-hitter on April 10 of last season for his only shutout and
complete game in the majors, worked with runners on base in each of
the first five innings and stranded six.
The only run off the left-hander came in the first inning, when
Raul Mondesi singled with two outs, stole second and third, and
scored Brad Fullmer's bloop single to left field.
"I'm a sinkerball guy, so I give up a lot of hits,"
Schoeneweis said. "I've got a good defense behind me, so I just
want to get them to put the ball in play."
Al Levine retired all five batters he faced, and Troy Percival
pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in as many
opportunities. Percival has yet to allow an earned run this season
in 13 1/3 innings.
Troy Glaus and Adam Kennedy drove in all of Anaheim's runs with
second-inning homers, sending the Blue Jays to their seventh loss
in eight games.
Glaus' 10th homer barely cleared the 18-foot-high wall in right
field to tie the score at 1. Wally Joyner followed with a double
inside first base, then Kennedy hit a drive that landed a couple
rows behind the short fence in the right field corner.
"I battled with him and threw him a lot of low pitches down and
away, but he just kept fouling them off," Parris said. "Then
Fletch (catcher Darrin Fletcher) called for the high fastball, and
I didn't quite get it as high as I wanted it."
Kennedy, who had an eight-RBI game at Toronto on April 18 of
last season, has hit 11 of his 13 major league homers in Anaheim --
including all three this season. All 12 of his RBI this year have
come at home.
"He'll surprise you," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "If
he gets a ball that he can drive, he certainly showed that he can
hit the ball out of the ballpark. I think he's more patient this
year and you're seeing him work deeper counts, which will pay off
for him."
Parris (2-3) pitched six innings, allowing three runs and six
hits.
Game notes The victory was Mike Scioscia's 100th as Angels manager,
against 101 losses. ... Schoeneweis won at home for the first time
this season in four starts, including three no-decisions. ...
Anaheim's Tim Salmon, who struck out with two on in the third, is
2-for-29 with runners in scoring position. ... Angels CF Darin
Erstad robbed Mondesi of a broken-bat bloop single with a diving
grab in the fifth. ... The Blue Jays, whose 24 homers last season
against the Angels represented their highest total against any
opponent, homered three times Tuesday night in the series opener to
give them a major league-leading 65. ... Toronto pitchers have
allowed home runs in 11 consecutive games -- 19 during that stretch.
... After drawing a walk in the fourth, Tony Batista was declared
out when rookie Vernon Wells' grounder to the right side struck him
on the right heel as he tried to skip out of the way. Wells got
credit for a single.
