BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore Orioles found a new way to win.

Pat Hentgen pitched seven strong innings and the Orioles
parlayed three hits into a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on
Wednesday night.
David Segui drove in two runs and Delino DeShields scored twice
for the Orioles, who were 0-6 this season when getting five hits or
less.
"Tonight, fortunately, there was some timely hitting," said Mike Bordick, who drove in Baltimore's final run with a two-out single in the fifth inning.
The Orioles totaled 70 hits and 48 runs in their previous six games, but they won this one with pitching and defense.
With runners on first and third in the Detroit ninth, Jose Macias hit a line drive to second baseman Jerry Hairston, who turned the smash into a game-ending double play.
Jeff Weaver (3-5) went the distance for the Tigers, but his
second career three-hitter wasn't enough to prevent Detroit from
absorbing its third straight defeat.
"It's pretty obvious that when you throw a three-hitter and
lose, you made some mistakes along the way," Weaver said. "They
took advantage."
Hentgen (2-3) allowed six hits, including homers to Bobby Higginson and Juan Encarnacion.
Buddy Groom got two outs in the eighth. Mike Trombley faced four
batters before B.J. Ryan got three outs for his first major league save.
Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove said Ryan Kohlmeier, who is
usually summoned in save situations, now must share the closer's
job.
"Ryan has been a little streaky so far this year, and that's
probably had as much to do with it as anything," Hargrove said.
"It's not that I don't have confidence in him ... I'm trying just
to take a little pressure off him.
"Ryan's still a big part of the bullpen. His role may be diminished somewhat, but he still will pitch in save situations. I hesitate not to call him a closer, but he'll have some help out there."
Weaver got off to a wild start, walking DeShields to open the
first inning before hitting Bordick with a pitch. Weaver struck out
the next two batters, but Segui lined a two-run single to right.
"It's stupid," Weaver said. "You're out there thinking
exactly what you're supposed to be doing, and somehow you leave a
pitch over the plate that he can hit. I was fully trying to get to
pitch around him and get to Cal (Ripken)."
That was the Orioles' lone hit until DeShields hit a two-out
double in the fifth and scored on a single by Bordick for a 3-0
lead.
Hentgen worked out of trouble in the fourth when Hairston made a
fine running catch of a foul popup with runners on second third. In
the fifth, Detroit wasted a one-out double by Brandon Inge.
Higginson led off the sixth with his sixth homer, and
Encarnacion connected on Hentgen's first pitch in the seventh to
make it 3-2.
Higginson singled in the eighth and took second on a wild pitch
with two outs. Ripken then made a diving stop of Dean Palmer's
grounder down the third-base line, forcing Higginson to stay at
third on the infield hit. After a walk loaded the bases, Trombley
struck out Encarnacion.
"Cal made the play of the game," Bordick said. "That was awesome."
Weaver, who had won his previous three starts, struck out five
and walked two.
"We let one slip away," Higginson said. "We had our ace
going, and we had our chances. But we didn't scratch enough runs
across."
Hentgen struck out four and did not allow a walk. Both his wins
this season have come against the Tigers.
Game notes Ripken went 0-for-3, ending his seven-game hitting streak and dropping his batting average to .209. ... Higginson had gone 48
at-bats against Hentgen without a homer. ... The Orioles have
clinched the season series, winning four of five with only Thursday's game left. Baltimore has not lost a season series to Detroit since 1995.
