MIAMI (AP) -- Matt Clement looked like a different pitcher to the
San Francisco Giants, and not just because he changed uniforms.
Pitching against his chief nemesis for the first time since
being traded from San Diego to the Florida Marlins in March,
Clement retired 19 consecutive batters and allowed only one hit in
the first seven innings of Wednesday's 4-3 victory.
Clement (2-3) came into the game 0-3 lifetime against San
Francisco with a 12.51 ERA, all while pitching for San Diego. But
he limited the Giants to four hits and three runs in 7 2/3 innings.
"They've given me trouble," said Clement, who struck out eight
and walked two. "The difference today was I didn't put guys on
with free passes. It was a matter of getting ahead in the count and
not letting those guys jump on base on me."
Eric Owens and Derrek Lee hit solo homers, and Luis Castillo
went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly for the Marlins, who snapped the
Giants' season-best five-game winning streak.
Clement won for the first time since his second start of the
season April 8.
"I've been fighting my mechanics a little bit," he said. "For
me the key is going back out there and doing the same thing next
time, just piecing some good starts together."
Marvin Bernard singled sharply to left leading off the game, and
that was San Francisco's only hit until Benito Santiago singled
with one out in the eighth.
"He had a good slider and a good sinker," Santiago said. "He
kept us off-balance at the plate. He did a good job. The guy is
throwing the heck out of the ball."
Santiago's single started a comeback bid by the Giants. He
advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Benard's two-out single.
Rich Aurilia's RBI double made the score 4-3 and knocked out
Clement. Barry Bonds singled to center but Aurilia held at third.
"Fortunately Bonds hit the ball so hard they couldn't score,"
Marlins manager John Boles said.
Dan Miceli then struck out Jeff Kent to end the inning, and Antonio Alfonseca pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save in
eight chances.
Kirk Rueter (4-4) allowed nine hits and four runs in 6 2/3
innings. The Marlins improved to 2-6 against left-handers.
Aurilia went 1-for-3, dropping his average two points to an
NL-leading .397. Russ Davis struck out in all four at-bats, giving
him strikeouts in six consecutive trips to the plate. He blamed the
lights at Pro Player Stadium.
"It's dark out there," Davis said. "This is not a baseball
stadium. It's a football stadium. I didn't see the ball well, but
I'm not the only one."
The Giants scored in the first when Benard singled, advanced on
Aurilia's walk, moved to third on a flyout and scored on Kent's
sacrifice fly.
Florida took a 2-1 lead in the third. Alex Gonzalez doubled to
end a 2-for-22 slump, took third on a sacrifice and scored on
Castillo's sacrifice fly. Owens followed with his fourth home run.
Lee led off the seventh with his fifth homer. Castillo hit a
two-out triple to knock out Rueter, then scored on Owens' single.
Game notes
Florida improved to 5-11 in one-run games. San Francisco
fell to 7-2. ... Fitting gift: The Marlins, who have failed so far
in their bid for a new ballpark with a retractable roof, handed out
umbrellas to the crowd. ... Florida's Preston Wilson has struck out
33 times, which doesn't rank in the top 10 in the National League.
Last year his 187 strikeouts tied for second-most in major league
history. ... Wilson is swinging at the first pitch 55 percent of
the time, most in the majors. ... The Giants lead the NL with 16
sacrifice flies and have three in the past two games.
