TORONTO (AP) A sprained right ankle spoiled Ramon Ortiz's
strong performance.
| | | Benji Gil drove in two with this double, which was all the runs the Angels would need. |
Ortiz scattered five hits over 7 1-3 innings before leaving with
a sprained right ankle in the Anaheim Angels' 4-1 victory over the
Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
Ortiz (3-2) had to be helped off the field after injuring his
ankle while covering first on a grounder to first baseman Scott
Spiezio in the eighth.
Ortiz then went to a hospital for X-rays, which were negative.
He is day to day with a mild sprain.
"The outside of his ankle has swelled up," Anaheim manger Mike
Scioscia said. "When you're talking about an injury to the lower
extremity of a pitcher, it's not something you take lightly.
Hopefully, it's a mild sprain and he'll return soon."
Ortiz, who lost his previous two starts, struck out three and
walked one.
"His control was real good," catcher Bengie Molina said.
Benji Gil committed two fielding errors, but hit a two-run
double for the Angels, who ended a two-game losing streak.
"I'm a defensive player, and today was a weird day," Gil said.
"I don't know what was going on out there, but it worked out for
us. I'm just hoping Ramon is OK."
Toronto's Jose Cruz Jr. went 0-for-4, ending his career-high
hitting streak at 19 games. Toronto's three-game winning streak
also ended.
"It was career-high anyway, and any time you get a career-high
it's a good thing," Cruz said. "But we play again, and in the
grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter."
The Blue Jays scored their lone run against Ortiz in the first
on Carlos Delgado's RBI single.
The Angels took a 3-1 lead in the fourth off Toronto starter
Chris Michalak (3-1).
Spiezio led off with a double, and Tim Salmon walked before
Shawn Wooten loaded the bases with a two-out infield grounder off
Michalak's leg.
Molina walked to force in a run, and Gil followed with his
double in front of right fielder Raul Mondesi.
Michalak gave up three runs on five hits, and four walks in five
innings.
"He's obviously a good pitcher because he's been good so far,
but there will come a day when he gives up seven or eight runs,"
Gil said.
Spiezio's sacrifice fly in the seventh off reliever Pasqual Coco
gave Anaheim a 4-1 lead.
Troy Percival pitched the ninth for his fourth save in as many
opportunities.
Game notes The Angels have won just four of their last 14 games. ...
Ortiz gave up nine earned runs on 17 hits in 11 innings in his
previous two starts. ... The Blue Jays purchased the contract of
first baseman Luis Lopez from Triple-A Syracuse of the
International League. To make room, Toronto optioned second baseman
Ryan Freel to Syracuse. Toronto also placed left-hander Mike
Sirotka, acquired in a disputed deal with the Chicago White Sox, on
the 60-day disabled list.
