GAME LOG
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) While Shawn Estes worked the double play, Julian Tavarez felt the wrath of the crowd.
| | | Shawn Estes gave up five hits in seven innings to earn his second victory this season. |
Estes elicited three key double plays through seven scoreless
innings as the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 5-0
Saturday and snapped a season-high four-game losing streak.
"Today I had the double play. It was my best friend," he said.
Estes (2-1) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked five
before he was replaced by Felix Rodriguez to start the eighth. Rodriguez and Robb Nen combined on two hitless innings of relief.
"He had his moments of wildness, then he's get back," manager Dusty Baker said about his starter. "I don't know how many double plays he had, but that's a big weapon."
It was Estes' fourth straight win against the Cubs in as many
starts.
"I think the key today was they were hitting the balls at guys when I needed it the most," Estes said.
Jeff Kent, last season's NL MVP, extended his hitting streak to
four games with an RBI double in the fifth off Julian Tavarez (2-1). J.T. Snow also scored on a wild pitch in the same inning.
The closest the Cubs came to scoring was in the fourth and fifth
innings. Sammy Sosa walked, went to second on a wild pitch and
advanced to third an out later on Rondell White's single. But Ricky
Gutierrez grounded into a double play to end the threat.
Sosa again reached third in the sixth, only to be stranded again by a Gutierrez groundout.
Tavarez allowed five runs -- two earned -- on eight hits in five
innings.
Russ Davis hit a run-scoring double off Tavarez in the Giants' three-run first inning, and Armando Rios and Marvin Benard each had RBI singles.
Davis had just returned to action Friday night after serving a two-game suspension for an altercation with Tavarez during a spring training game March 26. Tavarez received a five-game suspension for the bench-clearing clash.
Tavarez was booed loudly by the crowd whenever he batted. He was
also jeered when he ran to tag out Benard in the third inning, rather than tossing the ball to first baseman Julio Zuleta.
Tavarez referred to the crowd at Pacific Bell Park using profanity and a term derogatory toward gays.
"The fans were mean," he said. "They started booing me
yesterday in the bullpen."
Benard wasn't bothered.
"A guy like that, when he gets on the mound, he gets in his own world," Benard said. "That's his competitive edge, you know. You can't take that away from him."
Barry Bonds, hit in the left calf by Kerry Wood's pitch in
Chicago's 7-3 victory over the Giants Friday night, was not in the starting lineup Saturday because of soreness. Shawon Dunston replaced Bonds in left field.
Chicago third baseman Bill Mueller was a late scratch from the
lineup against because of swelling in his left knee. Mueller fouled
a ball off his knee in the eighth inning Friday night.
He was replaced at third base by Ron Coomer, who moved from
first.
Game notes RHP Kevin Tapani will not start for the Cubs on Sunday
because of a sore right knee. Instead, RHP Manny Aybar will take
the mound against San Francisco's Livan Hernandez. ... The Cubs
play 18 of 25 games at Wrigley Field starting Tuesday when they
host the San Diego Padres. ... Benard batted in the seventh spot
for the first time since April 15, 1998. ... Nen is one save from
tying Greg Minton for third place on the franchise list with 125.
... Chicago catcher Todd Hundley, who was not in the lineup
Saturday, pinch hit in the ninth inning and struck out, ending his
nine-game hitting streak.
