SAN DIEGO (AP) Phil Nevin thinks the San Diego Padres need to
practice patience.

"We just need to get a few things rolling," Nevin said after driving in three runs in Saturday night's 8-1 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates. "It takes some time to jell sometimes and we have to stick with it."
San Diego won for just the third time in 13 games and is an NL-worst 9-15. The Padres got their second blowout in three days, following Thursday's 11-0 win over Philadelphia.
"I've said all along that once the guys at the top of the lineup set the table, we'll be OK," Nevin said.
Leadoff man Rickey Henderson had his best game since his April 17 recall from Triple-A Portland. Henderson reached base four times on two singles, a walk and a hit by a pitch.
Henderson, who scored twice and stole two bases, raised his career hits total to 2,921, seven short of Al Simmons, 31st on the career list.
Nevin had an RBI double off Bronson Arroyo (2-2) in a three-run third and hit his fifth homer of the season, a two-run drive in the fourth.
Adam Eaton (3-2) allowed John Vander Wal's RBI double in the first, then shut down the Pirates. He allowed four hits in seven
innings, retiring 13 of his final 14 batters he faced, struck out
eight and walked one.
"Getting out to the kind of lead we had," Eaton said, "I just
had to go out there and throw strikes."
Eaton's three wins have all followed San Diego losses. David Lee
and Rodney Myers completed the five-hitter.
"No sense in being overanalytical," Pittsburgh manager Lloyd
McClendon said. "We didn't play well in any phase of the game.
It's one of those games were you just have to put it behind you."
Ryan Klesko walked
four times, tying a Padres record
accomplished 13 times previously.
Ben Davis hit a solo homer in the second off Arroyo, who gave up
four runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Damian Jackson got the Padres' three-run third started with a
one-out single. Klesko walked, Nevin double in the tying run and Bubba Trammell hit a two-run double.
Game notes The last Padres player to walk four times in a game was
Quilvio Veras at Pittsburgh on Aug. 21, 1997. ... The Padres beat the Pirates for only the third time in their last 11 meetings in San Diego. ... Arroyo's previous two appearances were out of the bullpen following a 4-2 loss at Chicago on April 13. ... The
Pirates had homered in their eight previous games. ... Padres OF
Mike Darr, originally scheduled to start, had a stiff back and missed his third straight game. ... Pittsburgh rookie pitcher Joe Beimel singled for his first major league hit in four at-bats.
