Johnson strikes out 12 in loss
RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHOENIX (AP) – Even for two-time Cy Young Award winner Tom Glavine, beating Randy Johnson is something special.

Glavine held Arizona to a run in seven innings to overcome a 12-strikeout performance by Johnson as the Atlanta Braves beat the Diamondbacks 3-1 Saturday night.

"Sometimes in sports, good matchups bring out the best in people," Glavine said. "I think this is that kind of instance. For me, going up against a guy like Randy, it brings out the best in me."

Andruw Jones and Quilvio Veras hit solo home runs off Johnson (3-3) to provide the difference in a duel between two of baseball's best left-handers.

It was a classic contrast in styles, Glavine the control pitcher who gets players to fly or ground out, and Johnson the power strikeout artist. Together, they represent five Cy Young Awards. Both were close to top form.

"Greg Maddux said before the game, I can't wait to watch this ballgame. This was going to be a great ballgame,'" Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said.

Glavine (4-1) threw 96 pitches in his fourth consecutive victory. He allowed five hits, struck out five and walked two before being replaced by Mike Remlinger in the eighth.

"There are certain games that you look at and you get a little more excited about and you anticipate a little bit more," Glavine said. "For me this is one of those. As soon as my game was over in Houston the other night, I was gearing up for this game."

Steve Finley doubled off Remlinger with one out in the eighth, then third baseman Chipper Jones booted Jay Bell's grounder, putting runners on first and third with Luis Gonzalez coming to the plate.

John Rocker replaced Remlinger, to a chorus of boos from the crowd of 45,264, and Gonzalez grounded into a double play. Rocker got his sixth save in eight chances. "He threw me a two-seamer sinker, he took a little bit off," Gonzalez said. "I was cheating, looking for a fastball there. I know he's an emotional-type guy coming into a situation like that. I was looking 'dead red,' just guessing for a fastball."

Gonzalez, who has 13 home runs and needs one more to break the record for most homers in April, was 0-for-3 and is 0-for-7 in his last two games.

Johnson reached double-digits in strikeouts for the fifth time in six starts and 153rd time in his career. He left after eight innings when his pitch count reached 130. He allowed six hits and walked two.

"You're lucky if you can scratch a couple of runs off of him," Cox said of Johnson. "You know you're going to have to pitch a heck of a game against him. Tommy knew it coming in, and he did. He pitched great."

On an 0-2 count with two outs in the second, Andruw Jones hit Johnson's 95 mph fastball 426 feet over the center-field wall.

"I don't know if I've ever seen a hitter hit a shoulder-high 97 mph fastball to straightaway center field the way I saw Andruw Jones do that," Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly said. "Very few hitters are going to be able to do that. That was unbelievable."

Chipper Jones followed with a single, then scored on Brian Jordan's double.

"You just assume someone of that caliber is going to have a good game," Johnson said of Glavine. "So you go with those intentions, and realize you have little room for error. I made a few mistakes, and it cost us the game. That's about it."

Arizona scored its run in the fourth. Finley led off with a double, then scored on Bell's single to make it 2-1. Bell is 10-for-18 with runners in scoring position this season. Luis Gonzalez walked, but Matt Williams hit into a double play.

Mark Grace walked to put runners on first and third, but Glavine struck out Reggie Sanders to end the inning.

Veras, on his first pitch from Johnson with one out in the seventh, barely cleared the right-field fence for his second homer of the season and in as many games.

Game notes
Coming in, Glavine and Johnson were 2-2 against each other in five meetings. ... Johnson's first victory with the Diamondbacks came against Glavine on April 10, 1999, in Atlanta. ... If the Braves win Sunday, they would avoid their first losing record in April since 1993. ... Arizona topped the 10 million mark in attendance, the second franchise to do it in four years or less. Colorado is the other.
