BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Red Sox were in a giving mood, and the
Kansas City Royals were only too happy to receive.

Mark Quinn homered and had three RBI and the Royals took
advantage of five Red Sox errors in an 8-2 victory on Saturday.
"Usually, when a team makes five errors, they end up losing,"
Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney said. "We've been playing bad
baseball and when a team gives you an extra out, you have to take
advantage of it."
The Red Sox, who came in tied with the Seattle Mariners for the
fewest errors in the American League with 10, made all five in the
first six innings.
The errors led to four unearned runs for the Royals, including
the go-ahead run in the third.
The Red Sox, who last made five errors on Sept. 22, 1999,
against Toronto, had allowed just three unearned runs all season.
"We definitely didn't play well today," said catcher Jason
Varitek, who made one of the errors. "They were aggressive errors,
they were physical errors. We weren't making mental errors like
throwing to the wrong base."
Dan Reichert (3-1) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings
for his third win in a row.
"It wasn't clean, but he's got good enough stuff to survive,"
Royals manager Tony Muser said.
The tone for the game was set when Red Sox second baseman Jose
Offerman bobbled a routine grounder by Carlos Beltran, the first
batter of the game. Beltran scored on Quinn's ground-rule double
into the bullpen in right field.
The most bizarre sequence came in the third when Rey Sanchez led
off with a single, but reached third on two throwing errors. His
liner to the pitcher's mound bounced off starter Tomo Ohka's glove
back to Varitek.
Varitek threw the ball over first baseman Brian Daubach's head
and down the right-field line, and Sanchez took off for second.
Right fielder Trot Nixon's throw to second went over Offerman's
head and all the way to the wall behind third base, allowing
Sanchez to reach third.
Quinn drove in Sanchez with a sacrifice to right to make it 2-2.
The Royals scored their third unearned run in the fourth.
After Hector Ortiz hit a two-out double high off the left-field
wall and Luis Ordaz walked, Beltran hit a grounder between first
and second. Offerman made the play, but his low throw bounced away
from Daubach, allowing Ortiz to score for a 3-2 Kansas City lead.
Daubach was charged with the error.
Ohka committed an error in the sixth when he fielded Joe Randa's
grounder, but threw high and wide to third base trying to get lead
runner Dee Brown. The error allowed Brown to score.
"I know we made some errors, but those are the guys that have
made great plays and are going to make more great plays," Red Sox
manager Jimy Williams said. "That just happens."
Ohka (2-1), who said he wasn't bothered by the errors, gave up
four hits and one earned run in 5 2-3 innings. He walked three and
struck out two.
"I had a bad outing and had a lot of control trouble early in
the game," Ohka said through an interpreter.
Ordaz had a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Mike Sweeney drove in
Quinn with a single in the seventh.
Shea Hillenbrand's first major league triple in the second drove
in Varitek, and Hillenbrand scored on Daubach's groundout to give
the Red Sox a 2-1 lead.

The Milwaukee Brewers came into the day leading the majors
in fewest errors with just nine. ... Red Sox outfielder Manny
Ramirez went 0-4 to end an eight-game hitting streak. ... Varitek
has hit in seven straight games. ... The Red Sox had averaged eight
runs per game in Ohka's previous four starts. ... Hillenbrand has
hit safely in 22 of 24 games this season. ... Royals 2B Luis Alicea
missed his third straight game with tightness in his right
hamstring. ... Ortiz was 3-for-5. ... It was just the second time
this season the Royals had scored more than six runs.
