GAME LOG
MILWAUKEE (AP) Geoff Jenkins put an emphatic end to his
hitting slump.
| | | Geoff Jenkins smacked his third home run of the game in the fifth inning Saturday. |
Jenkins homered three times to help Olympic hero Ben Sheets pick
up his first major league win in the Milwaukee Brewers' 8-4 victory
over the Montreal Expos on Saturday.
"I felt good in batting practice today," Jenkins said. "You
never know when a situation like that is going to happen,
especially against left-handers. I just put some good swings on the
right pitches."
Jenkins joined Toronto's Carlos Delgado, Pittsburgh's Aramis
Ramirez and Colorado's Todd Hollandsworth as players to homer three
times in a game this season. Delgado has done it twice.
Jenkins has raised his batting average from .118 to .321 over
his last 14 games.
"Jenks has worked his way out of the slump by going deeper in
counts and swinging at good pitches," Milwaukee manager Davey
Lopes said.
Montreal starter Chris Peters (2-2) gave up six runs on five
hits in 4 2/3 innings. He also gave up Jenkins' first two homers.
"The first inning was a fastball," Peters said. "The second
time I hung a breaking ball. He was sitting on it, and expecting
it, and it was right in a spot where he could handle it."
Montreal manager Felipe Alou said he knew Jenkins had been
hitting well lately.
"He had a big game," Alou said. "He's one of the leading
hitters at swinging. By swinging, I mean attacking the ball."
Sheets (1-2) was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.
The right-hander who beat Cuba for the gold medal in Sydney last
summer made two minor league starts while the Brewers did not need
a fifth starter.
The Expos scored two runs off Sheets in the first, primarily
because of some fielding problems by third baseman Tony Fernandez.
Fernando Tatis was credited with an infield hit on a grounder that
could have been called an error.
Fernandez then booted an easy two-hopper hit by Vladimir
Guerrero. Lee Stevens drove in both runners with a double off the
wall in left-center field.
"It tested me a little early," Sheets said. "You just have to
dig in a little deeper. You want to pick up your guy out there.
"You go out there to win. The first win is always special. It
feels great."
After Ron Belliard walked, Jenkins tied it 2-2 in the bottom of
the first on a 384-foot homer to right.
He gave the Brewers a 3-2 lead in the fourth with a 420-foot
homer to right-center.
Sheets scored the Brewers' fourth run in the sixth. He walked
and advanced to third on two wild pitches by Peters. After Peters
hit James Mouton with a pitch, Belliard singled to score Sheets.
Scott Stewart relieved Peters, and Jenkins greeted him with his
third homer, a 435-foot drive to left-center to make it 7-2.
Sheets left in the seventh after Milton Bradley, Michael Barrett
and Geoff Blum strung together singles to make it 7-3. Sheets was
charged with a second run in the inning when Orlando Cabrera
singled off reliever Chad Fox to score Barrett.
Jeffrey Hammonds hit a solo homer off of Ugueth Urbina in the
eighth to make it 8-4.
Game notes Peters' 4 2/3 innings was his shortest stint of the season.
He had gone five innings in each of his previous three starts. ...
Jenkins became the seventh player in Brewers history to hit three
homer in a game. The last was Tyler Houston on July 9, 2000,
against Detroit.
