GAME LOG
DETROIT (AP) When two of the worst teams in baseball are on
the same field, winning with style isn't necessary.

| Williams |
"The only thing pretty about this game was the end result,"
Tampa Bay's John Flaherty said after the Devil Rays beat the
Detroit Tigers 7-3 Saturday. "We didn't do too many things well."
Gerald Williams was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and two
runs scored.
"It was good to get the victory," Williams said. "But we
still have a long ways to go."
The Devil Rays (8-16) avoided having the worst month in their
four years, but they need to win one of their next two games to tie
last year's April wins total, which was the lowest in franchise
history.
Detroit (7-15) will have a losing record in April for the eighth
consecutive year.
Mike Judd (1-0) allowed two unearned runs, three hits, walked
four and struck out two in his second start of the season and
seventh of his career. He moved into the starting rotation when
Travis Harper was sent to Triple-A Durham.
Judd looked like he had lost after the game.
"I felt like I gave up at least five runs," he said. "I
didn't feel very good out there. I was struggling."
He picked the right day and opponent to not have his best stuff.
The Tigers left 13 on base, including three in the final inning.
"The offense was just nonexistent," Detroit manager Phil
Garner said. "(Judd) had 70 pitches after three innings. We worked
the count, but we couldn't get a base hit. That's the story of the
game."
Tampa Bay ended its two-game losing streak while stopping
Detroit's winning streak at two.
Matt Perisho (0-2) gave up seven runs, six earned, on five hits
in 3 1-3 innings for the Tigers. Perisho got himself into trouble
by walking four.
"I lost command of my curveball, my slider and changeup,"
Perisho said.
Williams led off the game with a double and scored on Fred
McGriff's groundout to give Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers tied it 1-1 in the first Jose Macias scored on
Wendell Magee's sacrifice fly.
The Devil Rays took the lead for good with two runs in the
third.
After getting two outs, Perisho walked Williams and Russ Johnson
on 10 pitches. McGriff singled to score Williams and Johnson came
home as center fielder Juan Encarnacion, who casually fielded the
ball, was charged with an error.
Tampa Bay padded the lead with four in the fourth. John Flaherty
hit a bases-loaded RBI single and Williams, the first batter to
face Victor Santos, hit a three-run double.
Detroit cut the deficit to 7-2 in the fifth when Ryan Jackson
reached second on a Felix Martinez error and Tony Clark hit a
double.
Devil Rays reliever Tanyon Sturtze walked Magee with the bases
loaded in the ninth to score Macias and make it 7-3.
Tampa Bay manager Hal McRae said he didn't know the Devil Rays
entered with baseball's worst record.
"I knew we weren't on top, so what else matters," McRae said.
Game notes Tampa Bay acquired Judd from the Los Angeles Dodgers on
March 28 for a player to be named or cash. ... Detroit C Robert
Fick said Saturday he got into a fight early Thursday morning at
the Hockeytown Cafe, owned by Tigers owner Mike Ilitch. A Detroit
television station quoted an unnamed witness as saying that Fick
yelled a racial slur to initiate a fight with a bouncer. His
teammate Magee, who is black, said that was a false accusation. ...
Tampa Bay's Russ Johnson extended his hitting streak to 11 games
with a single in the ninth. ... Williams was 0-for-10 in his
previous three games.
