Padres rough up Day, pound out 21 hits in rout of Rockies

DENVER (AP) -- Vinny Castilla still loves hitting at Coors Field.

Castilla's four hits helped the San Diego Padres to a 13-4

victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.

The former Rockies star was 7-for-13 in the three-game series has a .334 average in 481 games at Coors Field. His average at all other ballparks is .256 in 1,299 games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"He knows this park as well as anybody," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had a nice series."

Bochy moved Castilla from seventh to the cleanup spot Wednesday.

"Boy, he responded, didn't he?" Bochy said.

On Wednesday, the Padres stranded 14 runners and lost 3-2 in 11 innings. Castilla was 2-for-4 in that one.

"I play good anywhere they put me and help my team win," Castilla said. "No matter where I hit in the lineup, I just try to concentrate and get focused and get a good pitch to hit."

Ben Johnson had a career-high four RBI, Adrian Gonzalez drove in three runs and had three hits and Khalil Greene had two hits, two walks and two RBI.

San Diego had a season-high 21 hits and took two of three from the Rockies after being swept at home by Colorado from April 7-9.

"A lot of guys had good games," Johnson said. "I came up three times today with the bases loaded, so it was nice to be able to get a knock for an extra base hit and get a couple of RBIs."

Chan Ho Park (1-0) won for the first time since beating Arizona last Aug. 31. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- and nine hits in seven innings.

"Chan Ho did a great job," Bochy said. "We need him to do what he did."

Zach Day (1-2) gave up eight runs and a career-high 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings. He is 0-3 in five starts at Coors Field, and the runs matched the most he's allowed in the major leagues.

"I threw the ball everywhere, mostly over the plate, where I didn't want it to go," Day said. "Right now, I don't know why."

Plate umpire Tom Hallion warned both benches after Colorado's Tom Martin hit Brian Giles with a pitch in the in the eighth inning. Park hit Matt Holliday with a pitch earlier in the game.

Day walked three in the first inning, and the Padres took a 4-0 lead on run-scoring singles by Josh Barfield, Castilla, Greene and Johnson.

Todd Helton had a sacrifice fly in the bottom half after Cory Sullivan was trapped in a rundown and stayed on the bases because Greene, San Diego's shortstop, dropped the ball.

Johnson hit a run-scoring double-play grounder in the third that made it 5-1, and then Colorado added three runs in the fourth on Giles' bloop RBI single, Gonzalez's run-scoring grounder and Greene's RBI double.

Miguel Ojeda hit a solo homer in the fifth, and Colorado closed to 8-4 in the sixth when Holliday scored on a wild pitch and Jason Smith hit an RBI grounder.

Gonzalez had a two-run double in the eighth off Martin, and Johnson hit a three-run double against Scott Dohmann.

"We had glimpses of us having breakout innings," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "The breakout never happened."Game notes
