“A joy to watch manage,” said HoFer Don Sutton in our 2006 intrvw re: Bobby Cox. “I sat there sometimes & said, ‘What the heck is he doing?’ And two innings later went, ‘Ah, okay, I see where you were going with that.’” Sutton, the longtime ATL broadcaster who died in 2021, said the record 14 straight div. titles won by Cox, who died Sat. at 84, were a far better measure of his skill than his 1 W.S. title. “It takes more self-control and more wisdom to manage a marathon than a 100-yd dash."
