Willie Weinbaum
On the field at Dodger Stadium 50 years ago Saturday (4/25/76), a day when Cubs CF Rick Monday - a Marine Corps Reserve vet - had 3 hits/2 runs/1 RBI, he memorably rescued an American flag from being set afire by two trespassers after they'd poured lighter fluid on it. That day during the U.S. Bicentennial, fans sang "God Bless America" & gave Monday a standing ovation. The scoreboard said: “RICK MONDAY … YOU MADE A GREAT PLAY.” He became an L.A. All-Star (1978) & broadcaster (1993-present).
