Duval's birdie putt drifted to the right on the 17th hole, giving Woods the Motorola Showdown at Sherwood victory.
After Tiger knocked his tee shot onto the right edge of the green on this par-3, 232-yard hole, Duval's first drive also reached the green, about the same distance beyond the hole, albeit with a tougher downslope. Duval's second shot wasn't even close to the pin, rolling to the right, and stranded him five feet away. Woods, about 30-feet away and downhill, calmly placed his second putt three feet away from the cup. Duval then grimly stated "That's good," conceding the hole and the victory. Trailing since Hole 6, Duval tried to close the gap on Woods by winning two in a row at Holes 13 and 14. But he couldn't make up ground from there, and at Hole 16 his first shot landed in a rock outcropping in the middle of the fairway and proved unplayable. Duval eventually had to concede the hole to Woods. "I just didn't play the way I wanted to," Duval said. Woods won the overall competition, which played under the lights for the last half hour, by two holes. The 18th and final hole was unnecessary. "It was quite enjoyable to play this way in front of the fans," Woods added, and the crowd roared in response. Woods grabbed the $1.1 million purse for winning this made-for-TV event, while Duval earned $400,000 as a consolation prize.
