What would have happened if Bonds got another chance against
"I wasn't looking forward to it," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy
after Los Angeles beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 Saturday.
"I've seen enough of Bonds in any kind of matchup. He's just a
remarkable player and that's all there is to it."
Bonds hit his 663rd career homer and fifth this season, a solo
shot off Darren Dreifort in the eighth. A night earlier, Bonds hit
a two-run homer against Gagne in the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss.
"I never want to face Barry in that situation," Gagne said.
"He's the greatest. I was looking for a double play. That's why I
threw two changeups in a row so maybe he would rollover and it
Milton Bradley homered and drove in two runs for the Dodgers,
who won their fourth straight despite a shaky ninth inning from
Gagne. The closer gave up two home runs last year -- to Todd Helton
and Vladmir Guerrero -- and six in 2002.
Lima (2-0) beat the Giants for the first time in five starts
dating to 1999, allowing two runs and six hits in five innings. Two
of his three walks were to Bonds.
"I wasn't going to pitch to Bonds no matter what," Lima said.
"But look where I am now. In spring training I was on the outside
looking in and now I got another start in the National League. We
can get out the broom tomorrow and go home with a sweep."
Lima joined the Dodgers as a non-roster invitee after going 8-3
in 14 starts with Kansas last year. He has made three relief
appearances for Los Angeles.
"If it's up to me, I stay in the rotation," Lima said. "But
if they want me to be the bat boy, I'll be the bat boy. At least I
have my confidence back."
Wilson Alvarez pitched two scoreless innings before Dreifort
relieved and allowed the homer to Bonds, which pulled San Francisco
to 4-3. Dreifort walked Edgardo Alfonzo, and A.J. Pierzynski
reached on Cesar Izturis' fielding error before Guillermo Mota came
on to strike out pinch-hitter Ray Durham.
"It seems like there's never a game in this park where it
doesn't come down to a situation we faced in the eighth and
ninth," Tracy said. "There was a lot of drama in the game and we
got a lot of big hits."
"It was a situation we wanted to be in, with the tying run at
second," Snow said. "We've only played 11 games but it seems like
60. We've played a lot of close games and it might have to be that
way the rest of the season."
Gagne got his fourth save, his 67th straight since August 2002,
when he induced Grissom into the game-ending double play.
"We haven't seen the same stuff we saw last year of Gagne,"
Giants manager Felipe Alou said. "This is the time you have to get
to him because if you see him in a week, he's not going to be
throwing like that."
Grissom and A.J. Pierzynski each had two hits for the Giants,
who lost their third straight.
Kirk Rueter (0-1) allowed three runs and eight hits in 5 2-3
innings, taking a 2-0 lead into the sixth before giving up
Bradley's two-run homer.
"I made a bad pitch to Bradley and he hit it out," said
Rueter. "There are no excuses."
Grissom gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the third with an RBI
double, just the second time this season San Francisco scored
first. Cody Ransom hit into a run-scoring double play.
